City urging people to slow down, obey signs

With the large amount of road work happening in North Battleford, the City is urging people to slow down, stay alert and obey barricades and signs.

The city issued a media release this week acknowledging that maintaining patience in traffic delays due to road or utility work may not be easy, but it was important to maintain the safety of motorists and the workers doing their jobs.

"It could be just one person marking utilities, a crew repairing a water main or snow clearing equipment clearing streets in the winter," said health and safety co-ordinator Steve Gledhill in a statement. "All of our field employees require and deserve a safe workspace."

The city is particularly concerned about drivers seen maneuvering around barricades in construction zones. They say a fast moving vehicle came inches away from hitting a city employee in one of these areas.

Gledhill says driving around barricades and into construction zones not only threatens the safety of our workers and potential charges to the driver, it may also damage infrastructure under repair which leads to higher repair costs."

Both Gledhill and the public works department are urging drivers to remain patient and pay special attention whenever crews are present, and are also reminding people barricades and traffic cones are set up for the safety of everyone.
