Humboldt city council held its regular meeting on May 25 with all members in attendance.

WASTE AWARD

Council will be sending a letter of congratulations to the Regional Authority of Carlton Trail Waste Management District (REACT).

REACT was the winner of the Regional Leadership and Partnerships award at the 2010 Saskatchewan Municipal Awards held May 14.

REACT was recognized as a sustainable regional partnership, with 47 members, which has implemented a substantial waste diversion program through recycling initiatives.

SAMA BUDGET

Council was informed by the Saskatchewan Assessment Management Agency (SAMA) that they are facing a revenue shortfall of over $2 million this year because of cutbacks in funding from the provincial government. SAMA will be reorganizing and reducing its workforce in response to the cutbacks.

SAMA is the agency responsible for the assessment of all lands and buildings in the province for tax purposes.

Mayor Malcolm Eaton told council that municipal leaders have some concerns about the agency's ability to provide up-to-date assessments with the cutbacks.

PASSING THROUGH

Council declared June 7-13 as Tourism Awareness Week. The event is dedicated to promoting the provinces wealth of tourism attractions and resources, as well as an understanding of the economic impact of the tourism industry.

LATER DATE

Council approved a recommendation from the Economic Development and Tourism Committee to move the New Resident Social to a date in the fall.

The event has usually been held in the winter.

LAND SALE

Council will be reviewing its "Option to Purchase Property" form to ensure clarity.

As well, council will consider whether to reduce the time between the filing of the form and the deadline for payment of the property.

The matter was referred back to the Administration and Protection Committee for more discussion.
