Cherry Sunday is making a return. The annual event will be held on Sunday, Aug. 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the north end of Bruno's Main Street.

BRUNO — A fruitful Bruno tradition has returned.

Last year, Cherry Sunday was cancelled due to the pandemic. This year, the annual event will be held on Sunday, Aug. 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the north end of Main Street.

“It's wonderful to have Cherry Sunday back,” said Debbie Kramer, the event’s co-chair. “It's a great fundraiser for our local organizations and it's a fun get together for the people that come out.”

The day begins with a Pancake Breakfast hosted by the St. Therese Institute of Faith and Mission. It goes from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. A trade show begins at 9 a.m. and goes until 4 p.m. Face painting and balloon animals for the children starts at 10 a.m. and goes until 4 p.m.

At 10:30 a.m., entertainment at the Bruno Credit Union main stage begins, with both local and out-of-town performers. Some of those performing include the Riley and Saretzky families, Memory Lane, Makayla Glessman, Bernadette Reifferscheid, Saltwater Joy, Carrie Ann Schemenauer, Lady Friday and Taylor Bulger.

The food vendors open at 11:30 a.m. Door prize and contest winners will be announced at 3:45 p.m.

“It will be a fun festival atmosphere on what is hopefully going to be a pleasant Sunday,” Kramer said.

Admission to the event will be by donation.

There will also be a Cherry U-Pick, depending on how well the crop develops.

A COVID-19 vaccine clinic organized by the Saskatchewan Health Authority will be at the event, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“They approached and asked us if they could come and attend and we said, ‘certainly,’ so they will be there as well,”  Kramer said.

Among the local groups fundraising at the event are the Bruno Lions, selling burgers and smokies; Bruno Central School, selling cherry sundaes; Bruno Library, selling used books; Bruno Golf and Country Club, selling elephant ears; the historical fire hall restoration committee, selling cherry tarts; and the Seniors’ Friendship Centre, operating a 50/50.
