Two thousand and ten was a good year for Canada.
Brad Trost, Saskatoon-Humboldt Member of Parliament, was pleased with the way things went over the year, even though weather had a huge impact on this area.
"Well I guess this is the year of the rain and how it's affected us," said Trost.
Since it is a rural constituency, something like weather can have a huge impact on the community, said Trost.
"Government programs started to kick in and we're looking forward to seeing how they response to the needs of the farmers but so far, we're hearing good things," said Trost.
Although the government programs stepped in, they will not know how things have worked out until this year's fall crop cycle.
"We did take proactive steps to help farming and agriculture in Saskatchewan that were met with a natural disaster, which farmers can't control," said Trost.
The other major factor this year was economic stimulus and infrastructure projects in the area, said Trost.
"It's been really good to see projects get built in towns like Muenster and Humboldt," said Trost.
"We even did highway funding in Humboldt and highways are never a federal government responsibility. It's good to see projects like that getting done."
Trost also said he has been involved with the International Trade committee.
"We're all Canadian, so things that effect the country internationally will effect us locally," said Trost.
"(The international trade) is important to Humboldt and area because of the agriculture connection."
Not only is international trade important, immigration has become more important to Trost as well.
"It's interesting to see new people move in from across the country and all over the world," said Trost. "We're dealing with a lot more immigration cases."
The only thing Trost was disappointed with last year was the long gun registry.
The federal government has been fighting to abolish the long gun registry. Trost said many NDP MPs were going to support the abolishment of the registry, but changed their minds at the last minute, which disappointed him.
Trost is looking forward to many things in the new year, including pressing on criminal justice, dealing with immigration issues and human smuggling and making sure all Canadians have access to national programs.
"The federal government's priorities are going to be keeping the economy consistent and strong," said Trost.
"We're not going to do anything dramatic, especially with economic instability (in other places), but we're going to improve family standards of living. Saskatchewan's economy has been quite good, so don't mess with what's working."
