BJORKDALE — At the Tisdale Minor Hockey Association Awards night held on Wednesday, April 27, Bjorkdale had a good showing, taking three awards that evening.

One of the more coveted awards is the Under 18 Hunter Award, won by Nolan Horn. The criteria for this award is: skillful play, good sportsmanship, dedication. His coach who presented the award had this to say about Nolan:

“Nolan Horn is a second year U18 player who fits every description this award is based on. I've had the pleasure of coaching this young man on a few occasions during his minor hockey and seen him develop into the player he is. Nolan is a gritty two-way player who backchecks as hard as he plays in the offensive end. Though smaller in size he isn't shy of grinding it out in the corners to win battles for the puck.

"He also contributes on the score board and finished fifth on our team for scoring with 15 points in 18 games, only taking one minor penalty. Nolan never missed practice, listens attentively to coaching staff and puts in a solid effort whether doing breakouts, skating lines or playing shinny.

"Though not vocal in the dressing room, he showed leadership through his play on the ice. His season was cut short due to a knee injury in early February and his presence was missed. He will continue to be valuable player as a senior next year and am sure will enjoy dishing out some rookie cuts as he received quite a carve job last fall.”

Others in Bjorkdale who had received awards were Layne Guest for the “Most Dedicated” Esso award and Joseph Alderman for “Most Sportsmanlike” Esso award. Congratulations Nolan, Layne and Joseph for representing Bjorkdale proud!

The Bjorkdale skating rink board had put on a hockey draft with over 48 entries. The final day of regular NHL league play ended on Saturday and first place and winning $384 was team Sarah Goldsworthy, which included Sarah and her grandpa Richard Dolezsar. Second place went to Isaac Orr, with a team name of Hitting Posts, and he will take home $96. Thank you to everyone who supported the Bjorkdale skating rink hockey draft.

Archery is wrapping up for the year with Bjorkdale competing in the NASP Virtual Provincial Tournament the week of April 25. The younger archers did their shoot on Monday with the more experienced archers to shoot on April 28.

Badminton season has come and gone with Grace Mohr who was the only senior student to make it to North East Sask Schools Athletic Conference finals. She finished second in her pool, and forth overall in Girls Singles. On April 29 James Van Hassert went to junior NESACS and finished in the top eight.

Another day of Kids in the Kitchen is planned for the kids at Bjorkdale School. There final day of cooking will be on May 4 and they will be making stroganoff noodles and meatballs. The after school program has had an excellent response with all the kids really enjoying getting to make their own meals and take them home to show off what they had made.

The amalgamation voting did not go as hoped for the Beeland, Parkland and Carrot River co-op boards. It seems that after a news release was posted, that Carrot River residents voted a resounding 90.4 per cent for amalgamation, Hudson Bay, 75 per cent but because there was only a 44.5 percent vote for amalgamation in Porcupine Plain, that it did not get approved. As it stands, all three co-ops will continue to serve their communities respectively. I personally was looking forward to having one co-op number but I guess we will have to wait and see what each of the boards decide moving forward.
