HUMBOLDT – The Humboldt Public School and Humboldt Collegiate Institute will receive new portable classrooms in the fall of 2024.
There are many portables out to tender provincially, following the Government of Saskatchewan’s recent resource allocation, and this may affect timelines. However, it is expected the new classrooms at HPS and HCI will be ready for use early in the 2024-25 school year.
Horizon School Division’s director of education, Kevin Garinger, said when HPS was built in 2014, enrollment was around 280 students and today is increasing to close to 350.
Humboldt Public School utilization is 112 per cent. The Ministry of Education calculates utilization using many factors including student enrolment, grade configuration, square footage allocated to classroom spaces, common areas and practical and applied arts/gym spaces. This formula is updated periodically in consultation with school divisions.
Garinger said HPS’s homeroom class sizes are between 14 and 25 students. HCI’s school use is at 108 per cent. HCI’s homeroom class sizes are between 17 and 29 students.
The addition of the portables at both locations is expected to reduce their use rates below 100 per cent.
Both Humboldt Public School and Humboldt Collegiate were designed for additional classroom space to be added. HPS’s new classroom will be added at the north end of the school near the staff and visitor parking area. HCI’s new classroom will be added on the south end of the building nearest to the student parking lot.
