The Battlefords Registered Music Teachers Association's annual Canada Music Week recital series reflects the theme, "Music Keeps You Young at Heart."
The concert, scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21 at Chapel Gallery, will feature both piano and vocal items performed by talented students, as well as music from an adult member of the association. A tribute to the musical career of Junice Headley will be part of the program.
A well-known music teacher in the Battlefords, Headley has been an active member of the BRMTA since 1954. During that time, she has prepared hundreds of students for participation in festivals, Royal Conservatory of Music examinations and concerts.
Canada Music Week is commemorated in the third week of November each year, which includes Nov. 22, the day honouring St. Cecilia, patron saint of music. This year marks the 50th season since the event was inaugurated. A special 50th anniversary cake will be served following the program.
Canada Music Week activities aim to introduce music of contemporary Canadian composers, to recognize the performers and to emphasize not only Canadian work, but also the significance of music generally. This year marks the 200th anniversary of Chopin's birth, and there will be several performances of his music to recognize this special event.
Along with the young performers on the program, guest artist, the Meota Hobby Band, will perform band favourites.
