NORTH BATTLEFORD — The North Battleford City Kinsmen Band presented their first spring concert since the start of the pandemic at their band hall Sunday, May 15.

Dubbed Music Magic, the event largely featured the film music of Disney and saw a sold-out performance and standing ovation.

“Music has an incredible power to transport the listener into a different world, whether that’s in the plains of Africa, the streets of Paris or flying on a magic carpet ride,” said Chinley Hinacay, artistic director and general manager of the Kinsmen Band.

“We wanted to take our audience on a journey to different worlds and I think that’s exactly what we were able to accomplish.” Hinacay led the ensembles alongside Kinsmen Choir director Muriel Tatchell.

The concert’s success marks the end of the organization’s first complete season since 2019. Throughout their 20-2022 season, the organization produced a virtual Remembrance Day performance, a Christmas concert and a performance at the live-concert venue and former band home, She-nanigans. The group also hosted a benefit concert March 13th in order to raise funds for the Red Cross' Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal. Raising $2,870, the concert featured performances from local musicians from the Battlefords as well as the Kinsmen Concert Band and Choir.

The North Battleford City Kinsmen Band typically runs from September - May with performances throughout the year. The Kinsmen Band offers instrumental and choral groups for all ages and abilities. Rehearsals typically run during the evenings on Mondays (Concert Band), Tuesdays (Jazz Band), Wednesdays (Choir) and Thursdays (Youth Ensemble). The organization also offers youth funding in the form of bursaries which cover participation fees. For more information on the programs offered, please visit .
