Haunted Humboldt: Footsteps in the dark

It's an old home, very old in fact. Built in 1912 during the Edwardian era, this crisp white cottage-style home in the heart of Humboldt, near wispy fields and railway tracks, probably has many stories to tell, if walls could talk.

It's an old home, very old in fact. Built in 1912 during the Edwardian era, this crisp white cottage-style home in the heart of Humboldt, near wispy fields and railway tracks, probably has many stories to tell, if walls could talk.

And maybe they're starting to.

"I was sitting at my computer during the day - this is when I was in between jobs," said Eric. "I was all alone, the house was quiet, when suddenly I heard running up above me on the second floor. It was frantic and loud, going from one end of the hallway to the other."

Eric is adamant it wasn't a small animal scurrying across the rooftop.

"No, it was directly above me. I could even feel the walls shake a little," he said.

That was the first spook Eric had in the house he had just moved into with his fianc茅, Chrissy.

But in fact, Chrissy had been living in the house longer than Eric, before he moved in with her.

"When we'd talk on the phone, she'd suddenly stop talking," Eric said.

"I'd ask her what was wrong and she'd say that she just heard footsteps, but she was alone in the house."

Even after Eric moved in, the bizarre sounds didn't stop.

"There's been times where we've been watching TV and we'll hear loud banging coming from upstairs," Eric said. "But there's no one up there. I'll go upstairs to check it out and it's just empty."

Oh and speaking of TV, it seems whatever is lurking in Eric and Chrissy's house has an affinity for some late-night boob tube - that, or it's desperately seeking their attention.

"There's been many times where we've been lying in bed, going to sleep, when suddenly I can see the glare from the TV in the living room come on," said Eric. "This has happened a few times, and a couple of times the amplifier will come on."
Eric paused.

"The weirdest part is that I mute the amplifier instead of turning it off. But "they" have figured out a way to un-mute it, along with turning on the TV," he said.

As well, many paranormal experts believe that animals, like dogs and cats, can see and hear things we can't; if your cat's fur suddenly stands on end or your dog starts barking at nothing, it's a good indicator, paranormal psychologists believe, that it's not just you and your pet in the room.

Eric and Chrissy have a dog, Sascha.

A docile, gentle mutt, Sascha never growls or barks, Eric said.

That is, almost never.

"I was at home alone one day, doing laundry. Sascha was in the room with me when suddenly she started growling at something outside the room. Her ears were back and she was making this deep, throaty growl," Eric said.

"It's the only time I've ever heard her growl. She was angry."

Eric kept patting Sascha, trying to calm her down.

"I didn't tell Chrissy about it happening until the next day," he said. "She was freaked out too."

Is Eric and Chrissy's house just a victim of things that go bump in the night? Or did something a little more sinister, an unanswered story, happen there, long ago, in a little white house near the wispy fields and railway tracks of Humboldt?
