Hafford and District Music Festival held their competitions the week of March 17 and the program and awards night was held March 21 in the Hafford School gym. MC for the evening was Diane Jones. Piano accompanists for the vocals were Diane and Joan Julseth.
The choir scholarship of $40 from Holistic Heights went to Maymont Central School choir. The instrumental award of $25 from Hafford Cheremaka Dancers went to Rayna Yaseniuk. Individual verse scholarships of $50, from Radisson OORP, went to Kacy Tkachuk and $25, from Blaine Lake St. Andrew's Parish council, to Colby Tkachuk.
In piano, the scholarships for outstanding pianists were awarded as follows: Hafford and District Music Festival, $150 - Kacy Ykachuk; Olga Marciniuk Memorial, $100 - Colby Tkachuk; Dr.Alex G. von Dewitz/BL Vet Clinic, $100 - Audrey Friesen; Silver Sword & Chalice, $75 - Brooklyn Lesko; and Hafford & District Y-O Men's Club, $75 - Jocelyn Bzdel.
Scholarships of $50 went to: Taylor Anhorn, from Ukrainian Catholic Women's League; Megan Jones, from Oasis Nursing Home; Leah Kohut, from Hafford Recreation Board; Susie Kang, Mary Ciona Memorial; Kendra LaFreniere, from Hawryluk Funeral Home; Lucy Kang, from Hafford senior citizens; Sue Kang, from the Hafford branch of Innovation Credit Union; and Michelle Gall, from the RM of Blaine Lake.
Cheques of $25 went to Savannah Sutherland, from Zip-Stop Inn; Kevin Seo, from Speers village council; Cabri Tanchak, from Agri Team Services; Kathryn Naharney, from Lorraine Olinyk; Jenna Gall, from the Gonda family; and Jan Friesen, from Ken and Cathy Tkachuk.
Kacy Tkachuk won several trophies: most outstanding pianist, from Sherrit Fertilizers/Simmonds family; outstanding baroque performance and sonata performance, from Hafford and District Music Festival; outstanding vocalist, from Hafford Chiropractic Clinic, and the John and Ann Ogenchuk trophy for individual verse.
Jenna Gall won the trophies for beginners' piano, from the Blaine Lake Board of Trade, and for most promising vocal performance aged 14 and under, from BL Ambulance Service.
In choral speaking the NU-Way Store trophy went to the Blaine Lake Chorus and the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League trophy to Maymont Central School choir.
The Hafford and District Music Festival trophy for best senior or intermediate performance went to Audrey Friesen, the Olga Marciniuk memorial trophy to Brooklyn Lesko for outstanding junior or senior pianist and the Hafford Chiropractic Clinic trophy to Megan Jones for outstanding senior pianist.
The composer of the year in piano was Colby Tkachuk, winning the Hafford and District Music Festival trophy. The Hafford Orthodox Ladies' trophy for most outstanding vocalist went to Megan Jones. The Hafford CIBC branch trophy for musical theatre performance went to Jenna and Michelle Gall, Kacy Tkachuk and Kendra LaFreniere. The David Pidwerbesky Memorial trophy for vocal performance went to Afton LaFreniere.
In the open class, the John Worotniak trophy in piano went to Michelle Gall. In voice, the Gall family trophy went to Kendra LaFreniere.
Borden Friendship Club held their final bingo for the season March 20, with free beverages, and free donuts and muffins supplied by John and Eileen Petrun, in appreciation to those who have attended the bingos. Winning cash prizes were Ann Kohut twice, Stella Hawryluk, Jean Graham, Lisa Knowles, Jean Hryniuk, Mary Thiessen, Ann Brand and Lottie Petriew twice.
The St. Patrick's Day luncheon hosted by the Borden United Church was well attended. Thanks to the many who came out for stew or soup along with cookies and beverages. The next luncheon is April 7 in the seniors' room at 11:30 a.m.
Borden Action Bowl is winding down for the season with roll-offs this coming week. The students in Glo-bowl had their wind-up last week. The banquet and awards night, along with a silent auction, will be April 12 at 6 p.m. in the Borden Community Centre. Tickets are available for the roast beef banquet from Kendall Redhead, manager of the bowling alley.
