The Canadian Chamber Choir (CCC) is on their way to Saskatchewan and they will be making a special Humboldt area stop.
Performing on the Marysburg Centre of the Arts Stage on Feb. 7, the Choir will be joined by the St. Peter鈥檚 Chorus to celebrate both established and emerging Canadian Chamber composers and their music.
Founding member and Artistic Director, Julia Davids, says them choosing Marysburg as part of their Saskatchewan tour was quite intentional since they try to include every size of community on tour, as well as every kind of singing group in different ages and stages of their singing careers.
鈥淚t鈥檚 people engaging with other people through music but also through words so we can connect as people. That鈥檚 what the CCC really endeavours to do.鈥�
Just like any performance, she wants the audience, whether they like choral music or not, to be moved by the music and make a connection with the singers.
Some people can find Canadian chamber music quite daunting but Davids says they have made sure to curate the tour in a way where people can feel the connection.
Davids sees this Seasons of Life and Landscape tour as a journey through an art gallery where all the distinct Canadian seasons have their own room and very distinct works of art.
鈥淭his collection of art is loosely curated by season of effects, or emotion, or actual season,鈥� she says.
Along with well known pieces by Gordon Lightfight and Susan Aglukark, the CCC will also be including music by Saskatchewan composers, like Leora Joy Godden and Joni Mitchell.
But that is not the only Saskatchewan connection in the choir with three singers of the group also sharing their Saskatchewan roots, including soprano Valerie Hall, and altos Karla Ferguson and Deborah Buck.
Buck is happy that the Chamber Choir will be returning Saskatchewan after eight years of playing in other parts of the country. It has been too long, she says.
鈥淲e had a wonderful time when we were here last. Made such good friendships and connections, we鈥檝e been meaning to get back here.鈥�
Marysburg Assumption Church has been a stop the choir has wanted to make for a while, says Buck, but it has not worked out before now.
Marysburg and Humboldt both have strongly supported and knowledgeable groups and Buck says the CCC have some connections to Marysburg Centre for the Arts and the St. Peter鈥檚 Chorus.
What they鈥檝e done with the church is amazing, she says.
鈥淚鈥檝e been hearing about the acoustics for years and years and how special it is to perform there.鈥�
The CCC鈥檚 mandate is to connect with communities from across the province and the St. Peter鈥檚 Chorus was a good opportunity to connect with the Marysburg area.
Buck is very grateful for the hospitality they have already received and will be receiving from their choir friends since they will be put up for their time in Marysburg and treated to a pancake breakfast.
St. Peter鈥檚 Chorus Director Maxine Moore says it is an honour to be invited to join the Choir for their Marysburg concert.
This is an amazing opportunity to collaborate with another choir and be part of a bigger experience, says Moore, with the choirs both singing on their own and together to end the night.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 pretty much what we do wherever we go,鈥� says Davids, 鈥渋s connect to local choirs and organizations.鈥�
