Yep, we knew it was too good to be true! Winter did find us and when it did, it bit hard. Several reports of -40 drifted into the coffee shop. Funny how some people get a sad sense of accomplishment at others' expense. Last Tuesday morning, as the mercury sat at -38 C, one of the snowbirds from Yuma, Ariz. called coffee row to share that he was going fishing in the afternoon as it was 20 C. You can imagine the reaction of coffee row!
Marlene and Cornie Martens recently returned from Winnipeg where they welcomed two new granddaughters in the family. Their son Don and his wife Vonda have adopted Aster, age seven, and Aynelum, age four, from Ethiopia.
Get well wishes go out to Gail Loehndorf who is recovering from a broken leg. This is too late for Gail but for everyone else, be cautious as there seems to be ice on streets and roads and everywhere else.
The Rabbit Lake branch of the Lakeland Library hosted its annual Kaiser tournament Jan. 20. Forty-four players from Shell Lake, Spiritwood, Mullingar, Sandwith and Medstead along with locals had a great evening. Prizes were donated by local businesses and by local board members. Donna German donated a painting that was won by Stan Moore. Thanks, Donna. A great lunch followed the cards and was enjoyed by all.
Quilting has begun at the senior centre. Marge and Lynn Morrison have a full class. Perhaps they will be offering a sequel for those who could not get into this one.
January is the time for annual meetings. The Rabbit Lake and District Agricultural Association will be holding their annual meeting Jan. 27. The Rabbit Lake Community Hall will be holding theirs Feb. 2. Come to the annual meetings and see what is happening in your community.
A new business has come to town. Wright Choice Seed Cleaning, operated by Danny Wright, is operating out of the former seed cleaning plant. We are pleased to see that facility used once again and say congratulations to Danny on his business endeavour.
Tuesday night burger night at the rink is in full force. Skating lessons have begun, bunnock has begun and it is a great place to socialize with friends.
Two new residents have come to make Rose Gill Lodge home. We are happy to welcome Bernice Carnahan back and Rose Smith of Spiritwood as a new resident.
Think positive spring is less than 10 weeks away. (At least as far as the calendar is concerned.)
