School is out! And summer is only eight short weeks, so make the most of every day.
Graduation was held June 30 with the exercises at the school gym in the morning. The social and dance were held in the evening at the Unity Community Centre. Congratulations class of 2011. You made a big impact on UCHS and will be missed in those hallways. Good luck with your future plans.
Hello to my Maidstone and North Battleford readers, who have told me of their interest in Unity's activity included in this weekly column. Thank you also to those of you who have stopped me on the street to tell me of your appreciation for the content of this column too. Battlefords Publishing has put up two extra bins for this weekly publication at the post office, so pass the word on to your friends who don't yet know Unity is included in this newspaper. I always like to herald the events, activities, and accomplishments in our community and feel fortunate to have a venue such as this newspaper to help pass on the word about all our community has to offer.
Summer Fun Center began July 4 and runs every week day from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Leaders Jessica Gerein, Chantal Wagner and Becky Greenwald will keep kids ages five to 11 busy with crafts, games, outside fun and swimming. This is a great program offered by the Town of Unity.
The swimming pool is a busy place with lessons taking place during the day. Aquasizes are running and there is public swimming each afternoon and evening. The pool staff plan to offer special days throughout the summer such as moonlight swim and float days. They also take bookings for birthday parties. The Communities in Bloom committee is busy fine tuning all the projects they want to showcase for their entry in the national Communities in Bloom competition. Because Unity won the provincial competition in 2010 they were eligible to enter the national field. The judges arrive July 28 and committee members are asking all residents to keep their yards neat and tidy for this day. You can enter your yard now for the residential home garden tour taking place July 21. July 28th there will be a community picnic from 5 to 7 p.m. at the regional park with various activities to celebrate this event.
Star Express is again holding their fundraising booster nights for Unity Hospital Auxiliary. These dinner nights will be July 9 and 16. So, come and have a meal at Star Express and you will be helping this group with all that they do for our hospital and long term care centre.
Unity golf club is in full swing with ladies' night running Tuesday evenings and men's night running on Wednesdays. Watch for upcoming events they will be hosting throughout the season.
Unity Museum played host again to the annual Canada Day celebrations. This event was sure to please folks of all ages with food, entertainment, cake, activities, museum tours and the ever popular fireworks.
Three divisions of Panther girls' softball competed in Provincials this past weekend.
The squirt team won a provincial title in the C provincial playoffs. Look for their story in the sports section.
The pee wees were fortunate to have an experienced coaching team and headed to Watrous for their championship. They had a tough weekend with one win and two losses, finishing third in their pool, which wasn't enough to make it to the finals.
The coaches say they were pleased with the girls' performance. however they fell short in two games that mattered and were unable to capture a spot in the championship round.
The Bantam girls headed to B provincials in Melfort. Although some injuries just prior to this championship had them worried, the coaches were exceedingly proud of their performance as they did qualify with a 3-1 record for championship Sunday.
The team that beat them on Sunday, the Watrous Royals, was the team that went on to capture the provincial title.
This weekend Unity is hosting Midget B Provincials with a 12-team roster. Unity's team is experienced and hungry for a home town victory. Their first game is Friday morning against Kindersley. Good luck Midget girls.
Following softball provincials, Unity will play host to both mosquito and pee wee boys baseball provincials. Unity's diamonds are becoming so well known and liked that it is easy to attract teams, support and these types of competitions to the town. We are fortunate for events like this as they do boost the economy with an influx of visitors staying, shopping and enjoying our community and the event they came for.
Unity Midgets and Unity Bantams both qualified for the next round of playoffs in the Battlefords Ladies' League. The midgets played again in the Flats July 6 and the Bantams will return July 11 for their next game. Congratulations to MVP winners in this league, one was chosen from each team, Trislynn Isaac pitcher for Unity Midgets, Ali Cey catcher for Unity Bantams 2 and Mackenzie Chorney, pitcher and short stop, for Unity Bantams 1.
Next up for Softball will be Zone 7 tryouts for bantams on July 24. Players chosen will then begin practicing with their Zone 7 team that will move on to play in a zone tournament, hosted by Unity, on the September long weekend. This tournament will play host to the top zone teams, complied of the top bantam players in both boys' and girls' softball. Brent Weber, local bantam coach, has been chosen to head up the squad, along with Kelly Rempel of North Battleford.
Coffee row is happily discussing the summer weather, whether it be the sunshine in the day, the thunderstorms that brew up or the mosquito activity. They tell me it beats the heck out of discussing the winter weather and its challenges. So, you can see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row.
