The Borden Community Centre Preservation Committee held a ham supper March 10, which was to have been a snowmobile rally but there was no snow. Close to 80 attended. Donated door prizes were won by Ruben and Martha Rempel, Rhonda Funk, Judy and Wendell Dyck, Mary Saunders, Jean Brooke, Ann Brand, Connor Gustafson, Clarence Williams, Miriam Buswell and Marcelle Desrosiers. The committee had sold tickets for the rally and had $870 in sales, so $435 was given out as prizes. First prize of 25 per cent of the pot, $217.50, was won by Audrey Baker of Borden; second, 15 per cent, $130.00 went to Crawford Baker of Radisson; and third, 10 per cent, $87 to Lorraine Olinyk.
The BCCPC's next event is Borden Has Talent, April 15 at 1:30 p.m. in the community centre. Contestants are limited to 12, who had to register by March 12.
In Conference 7 Senior Boys 1A Basketball playoffs at Waldheim March 9 and 10, Hepburn beat Borden in the finals after playing Langham and Waldheim, with Hepburn and Borden advancing to regionals March 16 and 17. On the girls' side in 1A, playing in Canwood, Hepburn and Edam advance while Borden and Glaslyn were defeated.
Upcoming at Borden School is the SRC family social, with a St. Patrick's Day theme, March 15 from 5 - 8 p.m. Badminton is underway with playoffs in April. The senior and jazz band students are travelling to Edmonton March 12 to 14 to perform in a music festival and the jazz band is also performing at The Bassment in Saskatoon March 30 at 9:30 p.m. In the senior and jazz band are Michael Crabb, Tyrell Sargent, George Hembery and Aryn Polichuk.
The Fielding Wildlife Federation will be hosting a Region 2 meeting at the Radisson Hall April 14 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., followed by a roast beef supper and fundraiser entertainment at 6 p.m. For more info and advance tickets at $20, call Edna, 827-4924. The fourth annual skeet and target shoot and wiener roast will be held April 15 at 2 p.m. at the Keiper farm, west of Radisson.
Radisson Royal Purple held their monthly meeting March 5 at the Radisson Town Office with six members in attendance. Radisson is hosting the district meeting April 14. Donations were made: $25 to Telemiracle and $125 to the Elks & Royal Purple Fund for Children. $155.00 was sold in PEACE 100 snowmobile rally tickets. The ladies now have charity appeal tickets for sale, three for $5 with an early bird draw of $500 May 2 and the main draw June 9 for a 2012 Honda or $20,000 along with 12 cash prizes. The lodge jackpot draw was won by Kay Shipowich and lunch was brought by Linda Yuskiw and Kay.
4-H club members from District 29 met in Dalmeny March 11 for district public speaking, with three clubs represented - Borden 4-H Light Horse, Crown Hill 4-H Beef and Sask Valley 4-H Dairy. The judges were Mr. Brennan, Mr. Elke, Mr. Kehler and Miss Wouters. After everyone repeated the 4-H pledge, the speeches began.
In Cloverbuds, from Crown Hill, Courtney Yaseniuk spoke on goats and her baby goat and Cheyanne Roth spoke on her fishing trip; from Borden Light Horse, Savannah Sutherland spoke on their family trip to Florida and Colton Hanley told about fishing with his family. In juniors, from Crown Hill, Abigail Roth talked about deer hunting and Justin Yaseniuk on visiting Grandma and Grandpa; from the Borden club, Rachel Sutherland spoke of the family trip to New Zealand and Taryn Hanley spoke about figure skating and their backyard rink; and from Sask Dairy, Cobi Quiring talked about her favourite animal, the horse, and Chelsea van Rootselaar told everyone of her trip to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.
Intermediate speakers were Austin Ouelette from Crown Hill telling about 4-H and what it offers and some of his experiences and Anna Verbonac spoke on the impact 4-H has on a member and the different projects you can take. Then from Sask Dairy Ariana Mulder spoke on words, how they are used, intended and interpreted, and Leslie Wesselingh spoke on horseback riding and how it has enriched her life.
In seniors, from Crown Hill, Kira Cassavant told about music and how it affects our lives and Clay Cassavant spoke on his first vehicle purchase and how it brings responsibility and is not all positive as there are costs involved. From Borden, Melissa Saunders told all about whip-cracking, from how the whip is made, what you can do with it and where you can go to perform, and from Sask Dairy Logan Leyenhorst spoke on basketball and how it is more than just a game.
The judges then gave their remarks, stating that the members all did very well, had great topics and spoke from the heart. Many had great delivery and clarity but some read their notes too much, therefore speaking too fast and did not make enough eye contact, but overall there was tremendous variety, preparation and enthusiasm. Everyone received a certificate, with first, second and third in each category receiving medallions. First place in each group got a $100 bill and a plaque and go on to regionals March 17 in Paradise Hill.
President of District 29, Lionel Cassavant, announced the placings. In the Cloverbuds first was Courtney, second Cheyanne and third Savannah. In juniors first was Justin, second went to Cobi and third to Abigail. In intermediate first was Ariana, second to Leslie and third to Anna. In seniors first was Melissa, second Kira and third was a tie between Clay and Logan. The judges were thanked for all their work and given a gift from the district. Lunch was served by the host club, Sask Valley Dairy.
