The Neilburg seniors are back to holding their regular monthly games days. The October event was held Oct. 3. Edith Christensen and Mary Svajlenko teamed up to win the A side of the shuffleboard tournament. Lois Cammidge and Shirley Nuspl were the runners-up. On the B side, Mary Graham and Dorothy Harris were in top spot and Bev Watson and Edna Jeffrey were in second place. Neil Urlacher was the lucky winner of the raffle prize. Marjorie Worman and Marlene Spence were first in the cribbage games played during the afternoon. Dorothy Harris and Irene Ducherer had the low hands. Even if you aren't a senior, you can come out and enjoy a soup and sandwich lunch on Games Day.
Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Lucas Carl Bachman who died as a result of a motor vehicle accident Sept. 24. Neilburg Composite School had a beautiful day Sept. 30 for the annual "Terry Fox Run." The students brought in $1,042 in pledges, which is less than the school has brought in for each of the last 10 years. However, since 1983, the community has raised over $30,000 for this worthy cause. The Co-op grocery store donated juice for the children to enjoy after their long walk. The winners of the draws for the Terry Fox shirts were Mackenzie Horvath and Konnor Hiscock. Much appreciation to all who supported this event.
A cleaning bee was held at the curling rink Oct. 12.
The Manitou 4-H Club met at the Neilburg Legion Oct. 11. If you are interested in joining, contact Shane at 823-4925.
Neilburg Composite School is still collecting Campbell's soup labels and labels from other products made by that company that are part of the Labels For Education program. NCS receives various school resources depending on the number of labels submitted. You can drop labels off directly at the school office or place them in the bin in the entryway of the Neilburg Co-op grocery store.
NCS is also collecting used printer and fax cartridges to recycle through the Staples Education Program. If you are shopping at Staples, remember to give the school dividend number - 810157650-5. If you can't remember the number, you can give the cashier the school's telephone number and they can look it up.
Manitou Evangelical Free Church held a Vacation Bible School July 18 to 22. There was an average of 24 children per day with a total attendance of 34 children. The week was a beach bash, centred around fun on the beach. The learning areas were transformed into a beach setting. Games and snacks brought the beach fun to them. The village office made arrangements for the soccer field to be freshly cut so the group could enjoy outdoor games when the weather permitted. The children learned more about Jesus - who He is, why they can trust Him, why they need Him, how He can help when they mess up, and what Jesus wants them to do.
The children were also encouraged to share with others who do not have as much as we do. They raised $423.90 for Push the Pedal. It will purchase three bicycles and 31 Bibles for missionaries in India, in order to provide them with what they need to do their work.
There were 17 volunteers from the community who helped with the VBS week. The final session wrapped up with a barbecue lunch to which parents were invited. Despite the weather and power outages, it was a fantastic week.
