Unity had another busy weekend Sept. 23 and 24. And thanks to the gorgeous Mr. Sunshine, it was a grand weekend to spend outdoors.
The town has been and will be saluting seniors this week as national Salute to Seniors Week takes place. Events were held about town in honour of our seniors. St. Peter's School held a tea in their honour. The Delta Co-op served complimentary coffee and goodies in honour of our seniors. The New Horizons held a potluck luncheon to celebrate their senior successes.
Warriors volleyball had a senior girl's tournament in town with the home team earning a bronze medal.
UCHS golfers, Justin Wood and Mackenzie Chorney participated in provincials at Kenosee Park Sept. 23 and 24. Justin tied for eighth place out of 73 and Mackenzie earned 13th out of 48 golfers. UCHS is proud of their accomplishments at this high level of competition.
The teams and coaches have been assigned leading to the first ever 3-on-3 hockey tournament, starting Monday and running to Oct. 14. Players register as individuals and are placed on a team. This is great preconditioning leading into hockey season. Contact Unity minor hockey president Curtis Dyck for more details if you haven't yet registered and are interested.
The Unity Miners senior hockey club start their camp Oct 4 at 8:30 p.m.
The trade show is this weekend! Today from 3 - 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 9 - 4 p.m., the rink will be bustling with booth displays, fall fair competitors and spectators who enjoy this annual event. There is sure to be something for all ages so come out and support our hard-working Ag Society folks. Don't forget to take in the pancake breakfast tomorrow, sponsored by Unity Credit Union and Delta Co-op, with proceeds earmarked for the Paw Park.
Unity's Little Theatre is in the final stages of preparation for their upcoming production, Acting Funny, written and directed by Roxane Mamer. This popular theatre group is once again holding dinner theatres the evenings of Nov. 4 and 5 with dinner at 7 p.m., followed by the play at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 and can be picked up at KC Rescue or by calling Rose Mauthe at 228-2579. KC Rescue is the beneficiary of this event as part of their ongoing fundraising efforts.
One of the big changes in town that will soon be noticeable is the absence of Dan Feser at the local newspaper office. Some say he had the charm of an alley cat, others loved everything he stood for, while others reserved, and subsequently changed, their opinions of him after each week's edition was circulated. Nonetheless, his weekly Scribbles from the Cave will no longer be a topic for coffee row nor mothers laughing at his ways of making fun of, yet proudly portraying his family.
You won't be able to engage him in a conversation on the latest in sports when you visit the office, or scold him in a public venue for what he did and did not print. But next time you see him, you can shake his hand or slap him on the back and thank him for the job he did. Because like him or not, he made our newspaper fun. He did what he loved and he loved what he did. This note is not to memorialize him but to salute him - thank you, Dan! Even though he and his family are still in the community, he will be missed as part of your local news.
Tammi Bullerwell will be running the Unity Herald office now, and, after meeting her, it is hard not to be impressed with her infectious smile and enthusiasm.
Coffee row folks are chatting about the never-ending topic of the Riders and their season, especially the serious butt-kicking they took on home field at the hands of the Lions. Fans are showing mixed reactions, knowing the winning streak might not last but disappointed at this poor showing. The hot weather that is helping along the harvest season always brings a flurry of coffee talk, especially when the temperatures soared into the 30s. And so again you can see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week ...
