Several local youths are playing with the Lashburn Rugby Club. The team is planning a trip to Ireland at Easter next year. To raise money for their trip, the boys held a village wide bottle drive June 13. Planning to travel overseas are Carl Cammidge, Lukas and Jonah Biensch, Arlee Walde, Landon Watson, Kody and Chase Smith and Rylee Olchowecki. Alex Foster, who hasn't been playing for the 2011 season but is joining the team, is also planning to travel to Ireland.
Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of William (Bill) Michael Yaworenko, who passed away June 13, at the age of 79, in Battleford. Bill was born in Calgary in November 1931. His funeral service was held from the Neilburg Community Hall June 16 with Rev. Lorna Brick officiating.
The Neilburg School Community Council held their last monthly meeting for the school year June 6. A brief summary of some of the things the group has accomplished over the past two years follow.
Each year the Northwest School Division provides funds to each council based on the number of students enrolled. The council used some of the money to buy books for the library, purchase a Smartboard for the classrooms, host the Battle of the Bands, thank the hot lunch volunteers with gift certificates and purchased a robot kit for the robotics competition. With financial donations from the preschool co-operative, two picnic tables were purchased for the playground and along with a donation from CAGE, new stage curtains were purchased. As well, stairs for the stage were acquired to allow safer and easier access during award and other ceremonies.
At community council meetings, the group discusses student fundraising projects, field trips and any concerns parents have brought forward. The council, along with other school councils, have taken concerns about the early start of the school year and the number of days off to the division and, as a result, next year's first day of school isn't until Aug. 31. As well, there will no longer be any half days off and the full day PLCs will be held Mondays to allow families to enjoy a long weekend.
Next September the Neilburg School Community Council will be hosting a Harvest Hoedown. This will be an entire community hot dog and corn roast night. Old fashioned activities like three legged races, a sack race, and an egg toss will be held. This will be a night of socialization and a chance to meet any new families and teachers.
The school community council is looking for new members as two people will be leaving next fall. The requirements are not large - only one meeting a month. The rewards are wonderful - contributing to the education of your children.
