This is your last chance to take in the current exhibition at the Allen Sapp Gallery. "Portraits: Painting, Face-Pulling and Storytelling" is on display until the middle of November.
This show is a collection of Allen Sapp paintings combined with photographs (borrowed from the Drumming Hill Collection and compiled by Wes Fine Day) that tell stories and give cues about spiritual values. The paintings in this exhibition were selected from the permanent collection because they each tell a specific story about a specific subject. The majority of the portraits had been completed early in Sapp's career and many of the subjects aren't named.
"Face-puller" was a name given to the camera because it could "pull" a perfect likeness from the subject. This collection of photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries shows the subjects in traditional poses and regalia. They are snapshots in time, and they too, tell stories about the subjects and the social and political issues of the day.
