Members of the Neilburg Composite School Robotics Club travelled to Saskatoon on March 22 for the My Robot Rumble competition hosted by SIAST and presented by SaskTel. The students from NCS competed against 113 teams from across the province and, once again, had tremendous success. All 10 of the local teams placed in the top three of their pools, with eight robots advancing to the playoffs. Garett Brockhoff and Brandon Ironbow's robot, Gillmorgan, won the silver medal at the provincial competition. Organizers, parents, teachers and competitors all commented on the deportment and sportsmanship of the students from Neilburg. Our school was very well represented.
Teams compete with autonomous robots (no remote controls) in a sumo-style competition where the goal is to push the opposing robot out of the ring first. Photos and videos of the competition will be posted at www.ncstrojans.ca.
In addition to Garett and Brandon, other winners were: Team Kevin - Levi M./ Bailey Z, first in Pool 6 and tied eighth overall; Team Sam - McKayla G./Erich J., third in Pool 9; Team Pedro - Laura H./Kasey S., second in Pool 8 and tied 21st overall; Team Bill - Nevada G./Abby L., third in Pool 3 and in top 32 overall; Team Vincent Montgomery - Chad G./Eli J., first in Pool 10 and fifth overall; Team Baby Carlos - Dustin H./Shayla K., second in Pool 2 and tied sixth overall; Team Mr. Fishy - Christine M./Taryn T., first in Pool 7 and tied eighth overall; Team Dozer - Jonah B./Brandon M., first in Pool 4 and tied 14th overall; and Team Apex - Dylan H./Connor U., first in Pool 1 and tied eighth overall. The coaches for the event were Mr. Walson, Mr. Worman and Lauren Evanger.
The Neilburg seniors held their monthly Games Day April 2 at the Friendship Korner. Shuffleboard was played in the morning with Tom Poppleton and Vonnie Rutherford taking the A side. Shirley Nuspl and Marlene Washenfelder were the runners-up. On the B side, Les Christensen and Marrian Graham were the winners and Irene Ducherer and Marjorie Nattress were second. Nicole Ryall was the lucky raffle winner.
After the soup, sandwich and pie luncheon, cribbage was played. For the first time ever there was a tie for both high hands and low hands! Holding high hands were Linda McGarry and Edith Christensen and John McGarry and Cindy Vetter. Tied with low hands were Lyle Thom and Della Thom and Marj Worman and Irene Ducherer. The next Games Day is the first Monday in May.
Manitou Evangelical Free Church and the Marsden/Neilburg United Church held a joint Good Friday service at MEFC at 6 in the evening. The music team led in worship songs with meditations interspersed between them. Communion was also served. At the close of the service, those attending were reminded that it is "Friday but Sunday's coming."
The Church of God in Christ Mennonite held their annual Hymn Sing Easter Sunday evening. Refreshments and fellowship followed an enjoyable time of singing.
The Neilburg Co-op Agro held their annual Customer Appreciation beef-on-a-bun luncheon April 5. Many people attended with several door prizes presented at the close of the event.
A come and go tea was held in the Marsden Community Hall April 14 to celebrate Evelyn Morgan's 85th birthday. Evelyn, a long-time resident of the area, is now living at Pioneer Lodge in Lloydminster but came back to meet with many friends and relatives on this special occasion.
Congratulations to Lawrence and Julie Olsen on the birth of a daughter, Breelle Mae April 4 at the Lloydminster Hospital.
Thank you to Scott and Tracy Goodfellow for their donation of meatballs for the NCS hot lunch program.
The Grade 5 and 6 classroom at NCS is "going green" and trying to do away with disposable cutlery at lunch time. If anyone has any old silverware that they do not want, these students would be able to put it to good use.
Sympathy is extended to Ron and Deb Hein and their extended family on the recent passing of Ron's mother, Clara, at the Dr. Cooke Extended Care Home, at the age of 84. Her funeral was held March 23 at First Lutheran Church in Lloydminster.
Sympathy is also extended to Donna and Brian McIntyre and family on the death of Donna's mother, Dolinda Castellan March 21. Dolinda was born in Baldwinton and had many ties to the local area. Her funeral was held from St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church in Lloydminster March 27. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Fund or the MS Society.
