Local curler, Wanda Heitt, curling as part of the Darlene Gillies representing Saskatchewan at the Canadian Senior Women's curling championships in Abbotsford, B.C. the week of March 16 to 25 held an impressive 5-1 record as of Day 4. However, things did not go their way after their last win against Prince Edward Island as the team lost their last five remaining games for a tournament ending record of 5- 6 which was not enough to advance them to playoffs. It does show how close the competition was as Team Gillies was tied with Northern Ontario, Manitoba, Quebec and Ontario. To add to the ultimate experience of competing in a Season of Champions event, Team Gillies boasted three players making the first and second team all stars named at the close of the event. Tracy Heidt was named top lead for the first team and Wanda Heitt was named as the top second on the second team all stars, along with team mate Linda Kloschinksy who was named the third for this team.
The curling rink ended their season with the annual mixed funspiel. Eighth teams squared off in a round robin earning points for ends scored as well as the win. Winners of the weekend spiel were decided by top point totals, and they were: Team Huber, Team Spencer Powell, Team Sperle and Team Boser. There were players as young as 10 playing along players who categorized themselves in the senior category. The club also drew for their TV that was won by Ken Boerrichter. Ice maker Gerry Guggemos was commended for maintaining curling ice that was the envy of many players that included league curlers and visiting bonspielers.
Although Unity Minor Hockey did not have a provincial champion this year, they can boast of some league champions. The midget AAs ended their league championship title search with a game two victory that sealed the deal over the Prince Albert Raiders, Midget division. Unity Atoms white team had captured their league championship earlier March 3 when they overcame the Unity Atoms red team for the title in a close series. The Bantams had to extend the days of the rink in Unity by a few days when their series moved back to Unity for the league finals series with North Battleford. Unity dominated game one with a shutout victory of 4-0. Game two is in North Battleford Wednesday, and if game three is needed, it will be Thursday in Unity. The Unity boys that didn't have a Midget A team to play on, travelled to Luseland to join their team made up of Luseland Mallards and Dodsland Stars, titled the Stallards, played game one of their League Final on March 23rd and won in Double OT 4-3. Chase Green, Justin Wood, Kevin Bloder and Colton Timmermans are part of this squad. Their game two in the series did not go as planned and they were downed 7-4, which sent them to the deciding game three in Dodsland March 27. But they came out firing with all barrels and took the league title with an 8-3 victory.
