Nine members of the Crown Hill 4-H Beef Club, including Duncan and Rachel Sutherland of Borden, attended the Junior Ag 4-H Regional Show in Saskatoon, July 8-11. Rachel placed first in heifer judging, fifth in steer judging and ninth overall in the junior division, while Duncan in intermediates placed eighth in heifer and steer judging and seventh overall. In the other breeds yearling heifer class, Duncan captured second place with his shorthorn heifer, earning $45 in prize money.
At the 4-H competition, Cory Oullette from Crown Hill placed first overall in the stockman's competition and, with seven others, was selected to be a member of the provincial 4-H judging team which will compete in Prince Albert in August. In the showmanship classes, Rachel and Justin Yaseniuk, juniors, and Tyler Yaseniuk, intermediate, moved on to compete in champion showmanship but did not place there. Supreme champion showman was Amanda Libke of Hanley 4-H and supreme reserve was Kelsey Dust of the Heartland 4-H Beef Club.

Each member's placing, shrink weight of their animal and price per pound sold: Verbonacs - B.J. - eighth, 937 lb., $1.70; Ben - eighth, 1,027 lbs., $1.25; Anna - sixth, 1,168 lbs., $2.05; Sutherlands - Duncan - sixth, 1,120 lbs., $1.85, Rachel - seventh, 1,155, $2; Casavants - Kira - first, 1,216 lbs., $2.20, Clay - eigth 1,299 lbs., $1.55; Oullettes - Cory - ninth, 1,246 lbs., $, Austin - ninth, 1,309 lbs., $1.30; Yaseniuks- Kolten - seventh, 1,152 lbs.,$1.65, Justin - fourth, 1,230 lbs., $1.55, Tyler - sixth,1,248 lbs, $1.65.
The grand champion steer was shown by Cassidy Serhienko of Maymont, who belongs to the Saskatoon Beef Club. Her steer sold for $4.10 a pound and weighed 1,351 lbs. Her sister Katie Serhienko placed first in her class with an animal weighing 1,383 lbs. that sold for $2.10.
Jim and Lorraine Olinyk were the lucky winners June 30 of the double quad bonus draw in the Great Saskatchewan Red Cross Treasure Hunt, winning a Castles Along the Rhine River Cruise valued at $9,500. They do not have to take that particular trip and can use the travel voucher towards any other trip of their choice. They may use it to go to New Zealand to visit Lorraine's son, Bryan Pidwerbesky, in 2012 once the earthquake aftershocks in Christchurch end.
For those interested, Bryan, Helen and Nikolai have moved into their new home on an acreage in Christchurch and had no damage during the earthquakes, although they did lose a lot of sleep. Many of the schools have to be rebuilt and Nikolai's now attends classes in a portable classroom as his school was badly damaged last fall.
Ruben and Martha Rempel of Borden are proud grandparents of Anderson Kade, born June 22 to Jenna Rempel and Nathan Robberstad of Calgary.
