Hockey season ends with a hat trick

Another hockey season has come to an end and for our senior Three Stars, not as they had hoped with the league championship going to St. Walburg. However, the Junior Three Stars came home with a hat trick in the STEP League this year.

Another hockey season has come to an end and for our senior Three Stars, not as they had hoped with the league championship going to St. Walburg. However, the Junior Three Stars came home with a hat trick in the STEP League this year. The midget, peewee and atom teams were successful in their bids for their respective titles.

The midget team took on the Spiritwood crew and fought hard to make it a two-game sweep. They were cheered on by their loyal fans (and classmates) to the nth degree. Seven boys proved their dedication to the team and braved the cold of the evening, by baring their chests to reveal the home town name, in red and three black stars. They remained so until the game was over. Congratulations to our champions and good luck next year to the teams who just didn't quite get there.

With the closing of the season, brings on the minor hockey teams challenging the parents to a game. This was so for the bantam team when they took on their dads March 2 in the Edam Community Centre. They had a blast and the regular rules of the game kind of went out the window for the evening. All were winners in the fact that they had quality time together.

On the evening of March 11, the Handi-Van Committee held their monthly bingo. Ten games for hams were played as well as two blackout games for grocery hampers. Winning hams were; Giselle Bec (two), Huguette MacGregor (two),Kay Mannix, Glenda Weber, Irene Carlson, Ryan Bec, Huguette Johnson, and Herman Hoogland. Hamper winners were Marion Lewis and Jessie Bergeron. There were also three children's draws for the evening going to Ryan Bec, Kylee Bec and Kendra Ottas. The final bingo for the winter will be held April 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the seniors' centre.

The annual Edam Open Bonspiel was held on the weekend of March 11 to 13, which found 12 rinks after the championship. Sunday afternoon found the Gerry Gordon rink of Kevin Forbes (skip), Leonard Forbes, Gerry Gordon and Linda Forbes taking on the John Hritzuk rink of Lindsay Holmes (skip), John Hritzuk, Devan Hritzuk and Lorne Graham (subbing on Sunday was Dan Hritzuk). After a close game, that came down to the last rock, the Gordon rink were the victors of the first event. Placing third was the Pat Becotte rink and fourth was Roland Olson's rink.

The second event final had local rink Barry Weitzel, Bert Corbeil, Diane Weitzel and Debbie Doom taking on the Stein family of Charles, Rene, Eleanore and Jason. The Steins quickly gained the upper hand and took the second event title. Third was the Brandon Doom rink with fourth going to Larry McDaid's rink.

Two local teams briefly battled it out for the third event, finding Richard Doom, Twila Doom, Pauline Kobes and Jamie Dunlop taking on Maurille Corbeil, Carmen Suderman, Gilmour McDaid and Austin White. The Doom team swiftly captured the third event with the Don Cole family placing third and Ray Suderman's rink in fourth place.

The Turtle River Fire Association will be holding their annual general meeting on Monday, March 28, at 7:00 p.m. in the fire hall. All are welcome to attend.

That's all I have for this week. Calving is going well here and the weather has co-operated so far. Everyone has been saying they are ready for spring and I'm no exception. I can't wait until I can hang the laundry on the line and have that wonderful outdoor smell on the clothes. The seed catalogues are 小蓝视频 studied in anticipation of the new growing season and the grain farmers are no doubt making their plans as well.
