Golf Course winds up season with a fundraiser

The last of the big events at the golf course are this month. Sept. 10 the golf course is hosting the Annual Fun Day of Golf with this year's proceeds going towards the Unity facilities committee, who are on track with fundraising for the new ground floor hall and swimming pool. And Sept. 18 the club plays host centre for the annual Candace Heit memorial run. Pasta night in conjunction with this event is Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. in the tent, with Judy Warick as guest speaker. The cost is $15 and run packages for the next day can be picked up. All proceeds from the annual event are headed towards a memorial walking path. Make sure to call the golf club if you want information on either of these activities, or just to book a tee time at our golf club.

Welcome back, ladies who ventured off for a girls' vacation in New York and were caught in both the earthquake and hurricane that hit the city in one week. All travellers returned home safely and will have an adventure to tell their families about for many years to come.

Unity Public School held their annual pancake breakfast, sponsored by their school community council, Sept. 2. Parents, invited guests and students enjoyed pancakes, ham, fruit, coffee and milk to start off their day. This event has become a welcome annual tradition at UPS.

Welcome week will run Sept. 12-16 at the high school. This is usually a fun week of events including spirit days and their annual chili cook-off. As well UCHS is proud to support and participate in the Terry Fox fundraising efforts during this time.

Warrior football has begun! The season home opener was Sept. 2 at the Warrior field as the team met Meadow Lake. This is a rebuilding season for the Warriors and, although the home opener results were not favourable, the team will continue to work hard on the practice field to find a way to win this season.

Warrior volleyball has begun as well. Junior and senior teams had tryouts last week and are now into full volleyball action with senior league on Tuesdays and junior league games on Wednesdays. As well all teams have home tournaments slated this month. Watch the UCHS sign for upcoming event dates.

The Terry Fox Run is quickly approaching. The schools are lining up their fundraising and events prior to the actual event. Sept 18 will be an active busy day in Unity as you can start with the Candace Heit memorial run, rest/go to church/have lunch and then join the Terry Fox Run at 1 p.m. This year we have two routes going east and west through town and, if you do both, you will cover five kilometres. The routes are stroller, bike, scooter and pedestrian friendly with the start/finish point 小蓝视频 the Anglican Church Hall. For more info, call Val at 228-4536

Minor Hockey registration took place at the rink Sept. 1 and what a busy night it was. It appears the hockey program here continues to attract kids of all ages to the rink to enjoy a favourite winter sport. Of course, the executive is happy to have the ice coming in earlier this year and to be able to host the first ever 3 on 3 hockey tournament as previously players travelled to other communities to partake in this event. Registration for 3 on 3 hockey is still on, so please contact the town office or Minor Hockey president, Curtis Dyck, to ensure your child is registered. So, like it or not, hockey is sitting shortly on the sidelines but will soon be in full swing for this season.

Unity School of Dance has held their registration night and will soon be on the streets with their annual chocolate drive, to help fund some of their expenses. As well, they have their annual monthly lotto calendars to sell.

Gymnastics, karate, and minor football all have had their registrations and are now into their seasons. There is a multitude of activities to be part of in Unity and we are proud as a small community to offer such variety for kids of all ages.

I hear museum brunches will be back on the fall agenda. Watch your local paper, this column and posters around town for the beginning of this heralded event.

The trade show is creeping up on us. This annual event, held the last weekend in Sept., is now taking registrations for tables as well as entries for the fall fair portion. This is a fantastic weekend of variety, food, fun and fellowship so be sure to take in the event that the Ag Society folks work so hard to keep going in our community. There is sure to be something for all ages so come out and support them.

Harvest is now happening. Keep that in mind when travelling the highways as this is a busy time of year for farmers and you will need to slow down and be mindful when passing equipment you might meet on the highway.

Coffee row folks are chatting about the never-ending topic of the Riders and their season, especially the Labour Day win with Coach Miller returning. And the arrival of the harvest season always brings a flurry of coffee talk. And so again you can see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row.
