Firefighter's rally draws 90 sleds

The Borden Volunteer Firefighters held a snowmobile rally March 5. Ninety riders made the 55-mile round trip up to Redberry Lake and back to Borden Hall. Burgers and beverages were sold through the day.

The Borden Volunteer Firefighters held a snowmobile rally March 5. Ninety riders made the 55-mile round trip up to Redberry Lake and back to Borden Hall. Burgers and beverages were sold through the day. Prizes for riders went to: first Chris Wittig, Quill Lake $225; second Brad Roberts of Radisson $135; and third to Jeff Czank, Saskatoon $90. For non-rider tickets first of $160 went to Barry Saunders, second of $96 to Gloria Derbowka and third of $64 to Sandra Long, all of Borden.

The Borden Parks and Recreation Board held their Winterfest March 5. Free hot dogs and hot chocolate were offered at the outdoor rink at 2 p.m.. There were children's games and a few shinny games. The seniors held a whist drive at 3 p.m. with a collection of $61 at door for the parks and recreation board. Winning top hands were John Petrun and Heather Silcox. Low hands were played by Helen Sutherland and Ed Neufeld.

At 6 p.m. there was a stew supper with salads, buns, desserts with about 185 or more on hand. The entertainment for the evening started with Redberry Grass playing a few sets, then many jammers from Radisson, Maymont, Hafford, Speers and North Battleford played and sang for listening or dancing. Kendall Redhead of Borden sang three songs to give the musicians a break The parks and recreation board hosted a bar all through the evening and at 10 p.m. there was lunch of buns, cold cuts, cheese and pickles. The whole evening was by donation and all went to the parks and recreation board.

A memorial service was held in the Borden Community Centre on March 6 for Vera Saunders, who had passed away Feb. 11 at the age of 95, in the Langham Seniors' Home. Presiding at the service was Rev. Jan Bigland Pritchard, pianist was Linda Hosegood and a eulogy was given by son Ron Saunders. Memories of Vera were given by niece Sharon Assman and granddaughter Melissa Saunders. Melissa also performed a piano solo. Lunch was served by the Borden Friendship Club. Condolences are extended to Ron and Mary, Cyril and Louise and all their families at Borden and elsewhere and to daughter Elaine Saunders (Brian Hartshorn) of rural Saskatoon.

A baby shower was held March 3 in the Borden Seniors' Room to honour Tatyana Rae Kennedy, daughter of Carl and Amanda Kennedy of Borden. Tatyana was born Dec. 3. Darlene Sperling, who introduced the guests, Tatyana, Amanda and her mother Gwen Hacking of Glaslyn. A community cash gift and other gifts were opened by Amanda and passed around for everyone to look at. Amanda thanked everyone for coming and for all the many gifts.

Borden United Church hosted World Day of Prayer in Borden Seniors' Room March 4, with theme of "How Many Loaves Have You?" written by women of Chile. Guest speaker was Gayle Wensley. Different kinds of bread were passed around and guests also had to write down what they could give as their loaf of bread such as talents or doing charity work. Offerings went to Women's Interchurch Council of Canada.

District 4-H speak-offs were held March 6 in Blaine Lake School when Crown Hill hosted members from Soaring Dreams Multiple Club and Sask Valley Dairy Club. First place finishers all go on to regionals in Luseland March 13 and they are all from the Crown Hill Club - Cloverbuds, Courtney Yasieniuk who spoke on her favourite color, which is pink; juniors, Justin Yasieniuk , who spoke on his experiences of snowmobiling with his mom; intermediates, Duncan Sutherland, who spoke on a field trip to Regina and his experiences; senior, Kira Cassavant, who spoke on events in her life that she will always remember.

Judges were Elaine Bella, Twila Pambrum, Connie Onishenko and Megan Shaw and timekeeper Sheri Sutherland.

Other speakers were: Cloverbuds - Cheyanne Roth, Martin van Rootselaar; juniors - Kolten Yasieniuk, Jan Kielstra, Mirjam Kielstra, Bethany Pratt; intermediates - Anna Verbonac, Ariana Mulder, Neline Kielstra; seniors - Vicky Friesen and Ben Verbonac.

Borden School kindergarten to Grade 6 are holding a spelling bee March 10. Grade 1 and 2 are going on a field trip to Saskatoon March 23 and Grade 3 and 4 class go every Friday to Borden Care Home to read to the residents.

The senior boys' basketball team is in conference playoffs in Hepburn March 12. If they win an early game they qualify to attend regionals on March 18 and 19. Badminton is underway and junior boys play March 15 and 16.

The senior and jazz band is on a tour to Regina March 22 to 24.

Students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 have handed in posters for the Royal Purple healthy lifestyles competition and 20 students in Grades 7 and 8 also did essays. The posters were judged by the Royal Purple ladies March 7, with 51 from Borden and 75 from Maymont School entered. The essays have been read by some of the ladies. The entries all have to be entered in a provincial competition by March 31.
