Fall Fair kicks off with Super Cow event

The 21st annual Edam Fall Fair was held Oct. 28 and 29 with the Super Cow class (People's Choice) Friday evening.

The grand champion pair was owned by Grant Lodge Farms (John Grant) of Edam with the Jullion Brothers' (Denis, Guy and Mark) entry placing reserve. Third went to Bar Crossroad Ranch (Steve Harty), fourth to Brody Roach and fifth place went to Duane McCaffrey, all of Edam. Winning the draw for their choice of the heifer calves was Richard Pelchat, who chose the Steve Harty heifer to take home.

The Friday appreciation night was sponsored by Valley Ford Sales, Carst Construction Ltd. and Sask. Stock Growers, with the Friday evening lunch sponsored by Merck Animal Health.

Saturday morning started off with a ranch-style breakfast sponsored by the Canadian Angus Association and Pfizer Animal Health and prepared by the Edam/Turtle River Fire Fighter Association. The annual trade and craft show also took place starting at 9 a.m. and continuing until 3 p.m.

Judging the livestock this year was Blake McMillian of Nokomis with Daniel de Montarnal acting as ring man. The first class of the day was the Rancher's Choice Steer with 18 entries. Grand champion was owned by Bar Crossroad Ranch, reserve went to Devon Fox of Dauphin, Man. (shown by grandfather Andy Russet of Edam) and third place was owned by Bar Crossroad Ranch with fourth going to the Richard Doom of Vawn entry.

Second class into the ring with six entries was the Prospect Steer with grand champion owned by Coyote Mountain Tarentaise (Bill LaClare), reserve champion by Corey McFarlane and third place went to John Grant, all of Edam, with the fourth place steer belonging to Adrian Edwards of Glaslyn.

This brings us to the Rancher`s Choice Heifer class with 20 entries. This year the grand champion heifer was owned by Joe Cole, reserve champion by Duane McCaffrey, while third place went to Duane McCaffrey's second entry, all of Edam, and fourth place to Tyler and Kim Blanchette of Vawn.

Following the Rancher`s Choice was the Prospect Heifer`s five entries. Grand Champion went to Coyote Mountain Tarentaise, reserve to Coyote Mountain Tarentaise's second entry, third to Grant Lodge Farms and fourth to Grant Lodge Farms' second entry, all of Edam.

Then the Pen of Three Open Heifers class was shown. There were 17 entries with the grand champion going to the Kobes Brothers (Michael and Dwayne), reserve champion went to Jullion Brothers, third place was owned by Bar Crossroads Ranch and fourth went to Roach Ranching (Darryl Roach), all of Edam.

Class 6 was the Pen of Five Open Heifers with 15 entries. Grand champion was shown by Jullion Brothers, reserve champion belonged to Duane McCaffrey, third in this class was shown by Lone Spruce Ranching (Charlie Blaquiere and Sons), with fourth going to Ted Morin, all of Edam.

The classes of bred heifers were shown next with five entries in the Pen of Three and seven entries in the Pen of Five. Grand champion for the Pen of Three Bred Heifers was shown by Craig`s Ranching Co. Ltd. (Gordie Craig) of North Battleford, with Windmill Stock Farm (Doug Johnson) of Shell Lake, second. Third went to Silver Willow Ranch (John Roach) of Edam and fourth was owned by Scott Macnab of Mervin.

Taking grand champion in the Pen of Five Bred Heifers was Garry Blanchette of Edam. Reserve champion was the Windmill Stock Farm entry (Doug Johnson) of Shell Lake. Third place was the pen of heifers from Silver Willow Ranch while Carlrams Ranching Ltd. (Carl Ramsey) of Cut Knife took fourth place.

The final class in the ring for the day were the Pens of Three Purebred Bulls. This year the grand champion was snagged by Robb Farms (Jay Robb) of Maidstone with a pen of Simmental bulls. Reserve was captured by Serhienko/Voegeli Charolais (Dennis Serhienko) of Maymont. Third went to Crossroad Farms Simmental (Gerald, Laurie and Jody Woytiuk) of Shell Lake and fourth to McIntosh Livestock (Blair McIntosh) of Maymont with Simmental bulls.

Kramer Auction once again donated their services for the day. During the sale the rink project calves were sold. These are calves from cows cared for by members of the community and there were eight calves bringing in a total of $6,375 this year. These calves were boarded by Dwayne Kobes, Joe Cole, Stuart Cattle Station (David and Alice Stuart and family), Bernard LaClare, Jullion Brothers, John Roach and Don Cole (two calves).

This year's raffle heifer (contributed by John and Michelle Roach) was won by Charlie Kobes of Edam, (who kept the heifer). The secondary prizes were won as follows: $100 - Leon Ferron of Jackfish Lake area and $50 - Trent Petovello of Cut Knife. The rink also raffled a beef, donated by Louis McCaffrey, with Jerry Goodheart and John Collins of Edam winning a side of beef each.
