Old buildings can hold a lot of history in their walls, quietly part of a community's story until all that is left are memories and a few photographs. One of Maidstone's oldest buildings was torn down late last month to make way for new construction. The building spent more than a century standing near the corner of 4th Avenue and 1st Street East and in its many years served many different purposes.
The Maidstone history book, Between the Rivers II, published 10 years ago has stories and photographs of many of the town's buildings and, as times change, the streets of town also change. The book outlines the history of the simple structure that started out as Maidstone's first school. It was built in 1906 on one acre of land donated by J. Czspwiski, opening in December with 18 pupils registered. By the end of the year there were 37 attending. The building served as the school until 1918.
From 1939-1950 it was the community's hospital. Itspent severalyears as ArtisticFraming and Art Gallery, beginning in 1987, andover the years it was also a family home and a boarding house.
