The North Battleford Comprehensive High School Debate team went to their first debate of the year at the University of Saskatchewan Oct. 1.

For this tournament the debate team consisted of two teams and coach Lynne Thompson. The senior team consisted of Taryn Jackson and Zack Startup, and the Grade 10 team was Sean Newton and Taisley Isaac.

The event consisted of three debates and an impromptu speech. The resolution for the debate was: "this house would significantly increase the consequences for young offenders under the Youth Criminal Justice Act." Teams had to debate on both sides, affirmative and negative. The impromptu speech topic was describing a fantasy nation in which the speaker was the ruler.

Taryn Jackson and Zack Startup won two out of three of their debates, and although Taisley Isaac and Sean Newton did not win any it was a learning experience.

"It is a really good opportunity to learn, even if, like me, you don't come home with any medals. It's a great time," says Sean.

Although they never came home with any medals, they all agreed it was a successful tournament, which will help them improve for the future.
