The 15th Annual Polkafest took place in Hafford July 8 and 9.
The weekend was full of activity that included dancing to three bands, a polka mass, pancake breakfast and a jam for local musicians. The weekend always begins with a jam for musicians with dancing from 3 to 8 pm. Friday, is the day the dancers ease their way into a full weekend of dancing.
Saturday featured the music from three bands including Ray Stepp and Melody Kings from Torquay, Dennis Ficor Band from Regina and Ralph's Rhythm Kings from Saskatoon. Each band played throughout the day and the dancers thoroughly enjoyed all the bands. A short program was held and presentations were made to each band. At 3 p.m. all three bands played together and the number on the dance floor was an indication of how polka enthusiasts love this part of the day.
Sunday the polka mass was conducted by Father Ramel Macapala of St. Solange Parish. Ray Stepp and Melody Kings played the music for the church service. Father Ramel had the opportunity to dance down the aisle after the mass.
A pancake breakfast was served following the mass and the dancers continued to dance to Ray Stepp and Dennis Ficor for the rest of the afternoon.
Approximately 55 RVs were parked at the Communiplex and people travelled as far as Mesa, Ariz. to attend the event. Each year the event draws dancers from near and far.
The polkafest is organized by Nydia and Orest Pobran under the direction of the Hafford and District Recreation Board. It is a fundraiser for the Recreation Board and supports many activities in the community.
