A group of five university students canoed on the North Saskatchewan River. The voyage started at the beginning of the North Saskatchewan River near the Columbia Ice Fields in Alberta. They are on their way to Montreal, Que. through various waterways and lakes after they leave the North Saskatchewan River. They camped one night at the mouth of a creek in the Baljennie area close to the Phil and Lorna Bater farm. They got fresh cleaning water and a few other little farm goodies before they moved on down the river. Sara Lynn Bater made another contact on Facebook and the canoists were near Borden.
A bridal shower was held at the Baljennie Community CentRE in honour of Sara Lynn Bater May 16. Relatives and friends came from North Battleford, Radisson and the local area. Irene Greer and Joan Rayner were hosts for the evening. Sara Lynn and her mother, sister and the groom's mother sat at the head table. A few little contests, opening gifts and lunch filled in the evening. Good wishes went to Sara Lynn from all her friends. In return Sara Lynn thanked everyone for coming and for the lovely gifts. Sara Lynn Bater and Braden Houk were married in North Battleford June 4. They will make their home in North Battleford. Sara Lynn is the oldest daughter of Dwayne and Cheryl Bater. A second shower was held for Sara Lynn at a friend's home in North Battleford May 22.
Visiting with Stanley and Dorothy Mills was Stanley's cousin Rick Backle of Prince Albert, as well as Peggy Gretter of Sonningdale, Margaret Parrish of Willow Moore and Kay Robertson of Bjelde Creek.
The farmers have certainly been busy this past two to three weeks getting all the different crops seeded. A lot of the farm land in this local area has been rented out and new renters are busy seeding. Some of the early seeded crops have emerged. There were a few nip and tuck nights with Jack Frost. There are reports of frost damage to the canola crops and frost even had to be scraped off vehicle windshield. It's too early to really see what damage was done to the canola fields. If it is severe the crops will have to be reseeded.
Rain is needed badly. There has been rain all around our area, but none here so far. The high winds have been chilly and it almost feels like there is some snow close by. We do need warm sunny days to advance the new growth.
The wild fruit trees have put on a real splash of blooms, but it's feared the high winds and Jack Frost has done a number on them.
Most of the calves have arrived and the cattle are all out on the green grassland. Lizard Lake Community Pasture has taken in cattle for the summer months.
The RM of Glenside has a new pest control officer, John Hawmard of Biggar. He is out in the local area doing checks on farmyards and some vacant buildings checking for mice and rats. One has to take care around old building sites, for the pesky raccoons, they seem to be everywhere. Also old open wells are real hazards at old farm sites.
Get well wishes to Kevin Lang of Ruddell as he was in Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon after a heart attack, also to Joyce Custer of North Battleford who is in the Battlefords Union Hospital.
Glenburn Regional Park south of Maymont opened on the long weekend in May. Gary and Judy Gallie are the new park managers. They got off to a poor start when a young fellow from Spinny Hill area was stabbed in the back when a group of young people camping in the park got into a dispute. It sure does spoil a good long weekend for family. People like to be at the park for a little fun time not what has been happening.
