Borden Busy Bees Preschool held a bingo and bake sale Oct. 20 in the school gym. Winning the three kids' games were Bentley and Bo Burletoff and Hailey Harris. The adult winners were Alvin Barth, Bill Hosegood, Thomas Elgersma and Anneke Elgersma (twice) of Radisson and Greg Orchard, Winnie Sware, Jodene Seibert, Gwen Dyck (twice) and Linda Dyck (twice) of Borden. Winner of the $37 cash in the 50/50 draw was Joyce Orchard.
RiverBend Fellowship Church held an afternoon of fun and games in the Borden Community Centre Oct. 23. Adults played crokinole, Scrabble and tile rummy while the children played Wii games and air hockey. There was a kids' corner to play in, with toys or coloring, and Phyllis Domashovitz of Radisson was there with her popcorn machine. Coffee, juice and snacks were available for the afternoon and about 20 door prizes were handed out.
Borden Community Centre Preservation Committee held a gigantic garage sale and silent auction in the centre Oct. 21 and 22. Due to the generosity of the community, the hall was full of items and some were set out on the sidewalk by the hall. New items went by silent auction and many took home bargains from the garage sale. By 2 p.m. on Saturday, everything remaining went for half price. Members of the seniors' club looked after the food for the committee, selling chilli and a bun, desserts and beverages out of the Seniors' Club Room. Profits for the sale are going to help shingle the community centre.
The senior boys and girls volleyball teams are still doing well, with both teams winning tournaments Oct. 22. The junior girls were third at Medstead. Borden is hosting Conference No. 3 CV-1A senior girls' volleyball playoffs Nov. 5, starting at 10 a.m. Competing will be teams from Hafford, Medstead, Maymont, Canwood, Debden and Borden. The canteen will be open all day. The senior boys play Nov. 12 at Perdue against Hafford, Perdue and Landis.
Congrats go to the runners who competed at the provincial cross-country meet Oct. 15 at Middle Lake. In midget girls, Emma Pidwerbesky was seventh and Jasmine Bezugly was 10th out of 94 runners. In boys' midget, Duncan Sutherland placed 28th, Eric Westad 69th and Ryan Howell 72nd out of 97 runners. At the division meet, the boys won the midget boys' lowest score trophy and at provincials Borden placed fourth out of the 20 schools in the 1A category.
At the Borden School book fair Oct. 19, kindergarten to Grade 6 did presentations. Kindergarten to Grade 2 did a skit about looking all over for a book. Grades 3 and 4 each read a paragraph about competing against big schools in a reading competition, and right now they sit in seventh place out of 37 schools. They will keep on reading and keeping a log of minutes read in trying to be number one. Grades 5 and 6 did a skit with costumes called Bellerophon and the Pegasus, a play they had written from a book they read in class. Characters Bellerophon, the King of Argos, his wife and the King of Lycia all want the bad, ugly three- headed Chimera (snake, lion and goat) killed. With the help of Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom who brings a bridle for Pegasus, they ride off to find Chimera and destroy him. Winning the family draw was Liam Faith and Anna Gough won the preschool draw.
The Grade 3 and 4 class of Mr. George entertained at the Borden Seniors' Room Oct. 21. Each student gave a brief history of themselves, then showed what they could do. Savannah played the piano, Angel displayed landscape artwork, Spencer had four pieces of artwork on vehicles, Calem played the guitar, Zach read a poem and showed his artwork of a limo, Nicole had a picture of a pumpkin field, Carson demonstrated his Ukrainian dance and volleyball skills, Jade showed off her artwork of Snuggums, Elijah showed his hockey skills, Brooke had a drawing of Main St buildings in Borden and Colby read a poem and showed his landscape artwork and a magic trick. The seniors served juice boxes and treats to the children and guests had coffee and treats.
The Borden 4-H Light Horse Club has started with 13 members and leaders Alana Gunsch and Sonia Sutherland. If working with horses, they meet at Alana's riding arena east of Borden and, if doing bookwork, they meet at homes or school.
During Co-op Week, Oct. 17 - 22, Borden Co-op had coffee, juice and treats Oct. 19. Winning Rider door prizes were Kendall Redhead and Jean Hryniuk. Affinity Credit Union had donuts and beverages Oct. 20 and winning door prizes there were Danny Herter, Claudia Dyck, Jan Bigland-Pritchard and Marcelle Desrosiers. Radisson Co-op held the grand opening of their new card-lock, Oct. 17, serving free hamburgers and cake at noon. Samples were given out at the liquor store owned by the Co-op.

Borden Friendship Club held their monthly potluck supper and October birthdays celebration Oct. 26 with a display of everyone's hobbies, collections or whatever during the evening. Friday, Oct. 28 they hold their annual Halloween tea and bake sale at 2 p.m. in their club room, with prizes for best costumes.
Upcoming in Radisson is a flea market Oct. 29 in the hall from noon until 4 p.m., and the Radisson Ag Society will hold their annual Pumpkin Day Oct. 30 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with costume judging, pumpkin carving and decorating competitions, games and contests, including weighing of the big pumpkins, and a haunted house.
Radisson OORP are holding their PHR ladies' night Nov. 1 with supper at 5:30 p.m. at a local restaurant and then the meeting to follow at Roberta Harris's.
River Valley Anglican Parish have hired a new minister part-time, starting Nov. 1. Serving Borden, Maymont and Rosthern Anglican churches will be Rev. Debbie Ramage, who will be moving into the manse at Borden later in the year.
