Here we are in the last half of June. With school quickly drawing to a close, the students are counting down the days till their summer vacation. Class trips and final exams are pretty much all that is left in the school year. H. Hardcastle School graduation will take place June 30 at 2 p.m. in the gym, with a grand march to follow the exercises.
June 3, awards were given out for the science fair that took place May 18. After looking at some creative projects, six judges came up with their winners. There were two judges per grade and the science fair included grade 4, 5 and 6. These are the judges' picks for this year:
Grade 4 - first James Monteith, for Egg in a Bottle; second (tie) Brooke Bonsan, Blaize Courtenay, Tiana Olson for How does an Egg Float? and Ryan Bec Which Laundry Detergent is Best?;
Grade 5 - first Natasha Nedelec for Colour Explosion using food colouring and dish soap in milk; second Macey Levasseur, for Bacteria;
Grade 6 - first Kesha Schaefer for Animals and Oil Spills; second (tie) Lindon Goodall for Cats and Music and Brittany Nedelec for Which Pop is Hardest on Your Teeth.
Congratulations to the students on some truly inventive projects. I'm sure the judges had a difficult time picking the winners.
The weather co-operated and the elementary students held their track and field meet as scheduled June 7. The students were placed on four teams: Panthers, Sharks, Cougars and Eagles. The events started at 10:30 a.m. with a break at lunch and wrapped up around 3 p.m..
The kindergarten students are not eligible for medals however their points counted for their team in the final standings.
This year's medal winners included Tyson Orchison and Trayton Troesch with 21 points in the six-year-old boys' division. Second was shared by Braxton Letwinetz and Parker Miller with 19 points. Among the girls Ava Cole had 25 points and ShaunaRae Burgess, 19 points.
First place among seven- and eight-year-old boys was shared by Clayton Wolfe and Lee Bonson with 22 points and second went to Tyne Cole with 20 points. Jade Cole was first among the girls with 40 points and second went to Bailey Cole with 28 points.
Blake Blais and Ty Mosimann topped the nine- and 10-year-old boys' standings with 34 points. Second was also shared by Trayton Poole and Andrew Seipp with 30 points. Raina Cole and Haily Brennan each scored 28 points and second went to Jamie Millard with 20 points.
Kieran McConnell scored 28 points in the 11- and 12-year-old boys' division and second went to Zach Curry with 24 points. Kesha Schaeffer earned 26 points in the girls' division and second went to Brittany Nedelec with 10 points.
The relay winning team for the girls consisted of ShaunaRae Burgess, Bailey Cole, Raina Cole and Brittany Nedelec and the winning boys' team had Parker Miller, Clayton Wolfe, Blake Blais and Zach Curry as members.
The team with the most points of the day were the Eagles - Jessica Curry, Dawson Malenfant, Chelsea Bec, Ty Mosimann, Jamie Millard, Nadian Holloway, Danika Holloway, Hunter Goodall, Cameron Becotte, Blaize Courtenay, Trayton Poole, Kylee Bec, Jacinda McConnell, Ava Cole, Tyson Orchison and Dawson Sitter.
Congratulations to all the medal winners and runners up. We have an excellent bunch of athletes coming up.
The first garage sale day in Edam was held June 4 with at least 10 families on the map, but there were other families who part that were not on the map provided. The weather was great and there were a lot of visitors at each garage sale in town.
That is all I have for this week. I hope everyone got enough rain as it has been varied as to the amounts throughout the area. It is strange how one week can make a difference. Our pastures were starting to get crunchy from the lack of rain and now they are looking greener.
