Bready School was the last elementary school to be built in North Battleford and is now 50 years old.
It opened its doors in 1960 with four teachers and a caretaker staffing the school. The building had four classrooms, an auditorium and two play rooms (mud rooms), one at the boys' entry and one at the girls' entry from the playground.
The school was located "in the country," because there were few houses built west of 92nd Street at the time. The lone male teacher walked from his boarding house on 99th Street for the first week of school then bought a used 1947 Dodge from Calvert Motors. The car cost $75. The front passenger door would swing open whenever a right hand turn was made, but otherwise ran well.
Teachers and students of Bready School will be hosting a golden anniversary celebration later this month. Watch for details of this coming event.
