What a beautiful autumn! I find it difficult to stay out of a vehicle, wanting to just drive about enjoying the vibrant autumn colours. What could we possibly have to complain about? Harvest weather has stretched on and on and with the exception of one cold night we have been, for all intents and purposes, frost-free. How often do we get a September with day after day that is dry and clear? Over the last few days there has not even been dew in the mornings.
Harvest is over half done around here according to the farmers that I have asked. The wheat and peas are done, most of the barley is in and a bit of oats still is left to do. The main crop that is still out is the canola that refuses to dry and to reduce the green count. Some farmers are saying that a shower would help the canola mature but it does not look like that is in the offing. Again in talking to the farmers, it would seem that some crops are better than expected while in some cases the peas have been a disappointment.
The first Rabbit Lake Senior Sunrise Circle monthly potluck supper was Sept. 21. Remember that these suppers occur on the third Wednesday of the month and begin at 6 p.m.
Isabelle McLennan and Jeanette Krelow have been busy harvesting the community garden and according to Isabelle there was lots to harvest. So what happens to the vegetables from this garden? Many of them find their way onto the table at the annual Thanksgiving Supper. This year the supper will be held Oct. 8 at the Rabbit Lake Hall.
Our community sends its condolences to the Keith Penner family on the sudden passing of Chantel Penner. Chantel was the mother of Brooke and Spencer and the daughter of Dave and Bev Kowerchuk. Our thoughts go to both the Penner and Kowerchuk families.
Over the last week Lil Dodd and daughter Cheryl spent a few days back home winterizing their property and visiting friends. Judy Scutt is also back home after spending some time with her daughter Beatrice.
The Rabbit Lake Branch of the Lakeland Library is beginning its fall cycle of activities. Jay Kimball will be instructing a group of students in the best use of their digital cameras, Nov. 5. Donna German has begun her art program for kids.
The community bottle drive, along with a few donations, earned the library $302.60. A big thank you to those who contributed so that the art program could continue.
Rose Gill Lodge has a new face and has said good bye to a few residents this summer. Ruth Doberowski and Bertha Horn have been accommodated elsewhere while Walter Fertuck from Leoville had come to live in Rabbit Lake. Welcome, Walter.
A few locals have been going to the lodge to play Kaiser and that has been fun for all.
