Thirty-four members turned out for the June 29 Borden seniors' potluck supper and birthday celebration for June and July. After the supper, all those celebrating birthdays in June and July, and there were 12 present, had to tell a bit about themselves - when they were born, where they grew up and places they have been before settling in Borden. After the cupcakes baked by Gladys Wensley were enjoyed with ice cream, Happy Birthday was sung, then James Steel entertained with his fiddle, accompanied by Ed Neufeld on guitar.
July 1, the Borden Farmers' Market was held as usual with quite a few dropping in from neighbouring towns and from Saskatoon. In the evening close to 30 gathered at Halcyonia School 16 kilometres northeast of Borden for a potluck supper and time of reminiscing. The school has been kept up as a heritage site and the power is left on. Inside is a photo display of homes and yards of the early pioneers who settled in the area, also photos of John Diefenbaker and family as John attended Halcyonia school while his uncle Elmer was the teacher.
A bridal shower was held July 2 in the Borden Friendship room to honour Carol Baker of Borden, who is to be married Sept. 10 to Adam Aulin and moving to Fruitvale, B.C. Samantha Boyes welcomed everyone and introduced the head table - sister Stephanie, Carol, bride elect, and sister Angie Baker, who is also a bridesmaid. Also present were mother Bernice and grandmother Audrey Baker of Borden. Angie told of some adventures growing up on the farm with Carol. Joy Vaal, who along with her husband Pastor Vaal, had lived at Montrose, B.C. and knew the groom as a little boy in the early 1980s, told of Adam's early days. He was in a bad car accident when he was 15 and endured a long recovery. Then, when they moved to Radisson to take charge of the Baptist Church, she got to know Carol from the age of seven. She told of the courtship by mail to start with before the couple finally met each other at Sherwood Park, Alta. Their courtship continued by e-mail, phone, visits and letters culminating in their marriage in September. Casandra Boyes sang Let Me Call You Sweetheart, a message from Adam, then Samantha presented the community cash gift and Carol opened the gifts while the guests enjoyed lunch and beverages. Carol went around to each table and thanked the ladies for coming and for the gifts.
