BJORKDALE — The Bjorkdale Curling Club ran a Chase the Ace weekly draw in conjunction with Sask Lotteries.
Chase the Ace was held in Bjorkdale at the Bjorkdale Valley Inn every Friday evening starting on January 20 of this year. The way Chase the Ace works, twenty percent of the ticket sales for the week goes to the weekly winner, whose name is drawn from the draw bucket. That winner then has a chance to cut a deck of cards (same deck throughout) to see if they can cut the Ace of Spades. If they cut the deck, and happen to cut the Ace, they would win an additional 30 per cent of sales for that week and any of the accumulated jackpot to that point. If no Ace of Spades was drawn, the jackpot will continue to accumulate throughout the period of the lottery, wrote Michelle Hamel.
Draws were held every Friday at the Bjorkdale Valley Inn. Fifty per cent of all tickets sales went back to the Bjorkdale Curling Rink. Tickets were available for sale until 7:30 p.m. every Friday and then one name was drawn at 8:30 p.m., where after they were asked to cut the cards.
Winners by week are as follows; Carmen Cote, Al Mahussier, Grant Rusted, Chasity Tsapralis, Sheila Skaalrud, Kevin Hill, Ben Shepard, Darryl Fail, Carla McCormick & Jenna Patterson, Don Black, Kelly Reimer, Paulette Lucas, Diann Arthur, Gilbert Derosiers. On the final night, Carla McCormick & Connie Wutke’s names were drawn, so they automatically won $456. Carla then had a chance to cut for the Ace but was unsuccessful. Being Carla didn’t cut the Ace on the final draw night, April 28, names continued to be drawn. Other names drawn who had a chance to cut for the Ace included; Kelly Reimer, Antoine Mahussier, Lana Woulfe, Amber Hoffus, Marlin Holm, and Tristen Holm. Michelle Hamel, was the last name drawn and was lucky enough to cut the Ace of Spades, winning the final jackpot of $2,377.50.

The Porcupine School of Dance attended the Tisdale Dance competition on April 27 – 30. Among the dancers, Bjorkdale had three local students attend, Mirra Curry, Sarah Goldsworthy and Abby van Oirschot competing in the dance competition.
All dancers did very well. Sarah Goldsworthy danced two group dances in Jazz and Ballet and was awarded two gold ribbons. Mirra Currey and Abby van Oirschot danced in group senior Hip Hop and were awarded gold.
The Porcupine School of Dance will be hosting their annual dance recital on Saturday, May 6 at 2 p.m. at the Porcupine Plain School. Megan Hoffus of Porcupine Plain has been the coach for 11 years now and has done an exceptional job on teaching all the dancers.
The Bjorkdale afterschool program held their third kids in the kitchen day making Spaghetti and meatballs and a desert. There were 17 kids in attendance. There have been a total of three after school days where the kids in the kitchen has run and over 20 kids attended each day. Thank you to all the adult volunteers who have helped with this program. The kids have enjoyed using their own hands to create their own meals and learn how to cook. This program is brought to the community by the Community Initiatives Funding.
The Village of Bjorkdale now has the old landfill open for any yard debris and spring cleaning that residents wish to take out to the site. Only clean wood may go out to the old landfill location. Please contact the office 306.886.2167 if you require the old landfill.
