FLEISCHHACKER: Roman
August 9, 1924 – May 3, 2016
The death of Mr. Roman Fleischhacker of Humboldt, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital on Tuesday, May 3, 2016. He was 91 years of age. Roman was born on Saturday August 9, 1924 to Fred and Margaret (nee Poppel) Fleischhacker at Humboldt, the third of 11 children, eight boys and three girls. He was raised on the family farm in the Pilger district and attended St. Bernard's rural school. After leaving school, Roman and his brother Martin worked in logging and mining camps in northern Ontario and northern Manitoba, through some of the WWII years. In 1946 Roman and his brother Leo together started farming with horses. On April 20, 1953 Roman married Christina Jurgens in St. Joseph's Church, Fulda. Ten children, five daughters and five sons, were born to them. They continued mixed farming until retiring to Humboldt in 1987. In retirement he continued to maintain a keen interest in the farm for many years, and was proud to see his son David carry on farming on the original homestead. Retirement allowed them to travel including trips to Europe where they traced their roots in Germany and Austria, as well as wonderful trips to Australia, New Zealand, Cuba and Alaska. In his later years, he loved to read and watch curling. But his favourite pastime was playing cards, especially with "the brothers". Roman was passionate about his chosen occupation of farming, and always strove to improve rural living for everyone. With that in mind he was a dedicated member of the National Farmers Union. Roman also maintained an interest in his church and community. He was a long standing member of the Knights of Columbus and the Credit Union Board. He had a wonderful fulfilling life, and he died with dignity. Roman will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 63 years, Christina (nee Jurgens) Fleischhacker of Humboldt, SK; their ten children, ten grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren: Pat (Wes) Herr of Fruitvale, BC, and family, Jeff (Melissa) and baby son Roman, and Leon; Roger (Marliss) Fleischhacker of Middle Lake, SK, and family, Curtis (Chantel) and children Dylan, Jayda, Brydon and Alyssa, and Bradley (Alex) and children Aiden and Kory; Rita (Steven) Johnson of Sylvan Lake, AB; Hal (Yvette) Fleischhacker of Aberdeen, SK, and son Chad; David (Josie) Fleischhacker of Pilger, SK, and daughter Elise; Donna (Rick) Bargery of Vernon, BC; Laurie (Don) Plesh of Swan River, MB, and family, Logan and Alisha; Danny (Melissa) Fleischhacker of Roberts Creek, BC; Debbie (Stephen) Wilson of Auckland, NZ, and daughter Emma; and Garry (Liane) Fleischhacker of Montreal, PQ, and son Liam; brothers and sisters: Martin Fleischhacker, Emma Lang, Clara Ehalt, and Leo (Peggy) Fleischhacker, all of Humboldt, SK; Helen (Art) Hamp of Hamilton, ON; Alvin (Theresa) Fleischhacker of Newmarket, ON; Leonard (Eunice) Fleischhacker of Regina, SK; Lorne (Sherilyn) Fleischhacker of Drayton Valley, AB; sisters-in-law: Bonnie Fleischhacker of Aurora, ON; Angie Fleischhacker and Caroline Graf both of Humboldt, SK; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
