MENZ: Martha Agnes

July 31, 1938 - July 3, 2014

After a lengthy but courageous battle with cancer, Martha Agnes Menz of St. Mary's Villa, Humboldt, SK, (and formerly of Muenster, SK), passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2014. She was 75 years of age. Martha, the first child in a family of nine, was born on July 31, 1938, to Karl and Hildegard "Hilda" (nee Loehr) Menz at Humboldt. She was raised on the family farm at Muenster and attended Muenster School until Grade 3, then Ives School until Grade 5. Martha worked on the family farm until her early 20s, when she began working at St. Mary's Villa where she was employed for several years. In the late 1960s, she spent some time at John Dolan School in Saskatoon. Martha joined Futuristic Industries, a workshop in Humboldt, in the 1970s. She boarded at the home of Bernice Berting during the week and on weekends would always go home to Muenster to help out and be with her mother and family. Martha accomplished a variety of tasks at Futuristic; however, her quilt-making skills were highly valued. It was with great pride that she accepted a plaque recognizing over 25 years at the workshop. Martha retired in 2003 and moved back to Muenster. For the next ten years, she worked part-time until failing health intervened. In 2013 she became a resident of Quill Plains Centennial Lodge at Watson and, a few months later, relocated to St. Mary's Villa, her home until the present. Martha will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her four brothers and two sisters: Walter Menz, Marilyn Menz and Adeline Menz, all of Muenster; Ken (Doreene) Menz of Furdale, SK, and their children Kevin (Kelsey Topola) and Curtis; Melvin (Joni) Menz of La Ronge, SK, and his children Kyle (Erin) of Saskatoon, and Kathryn (Todd Weinhofer) of La Ronge; and Clarence (Penny) Menz of Saskatoon; and by several aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was predeceased by her father, Karl Menz (1970); mother, Hildegard "Hilda" (nee Loehr) Menz (1996); brother, Donald Menz (2000); sister, Monica Menz (1962, in infancy); and by her sister-in-law, Debra Menz (2009). The Prayer Service for Martha was held at St. Peter's R.C. Cathedral, Muenster, on Sunday, July 6, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., led by Lillian Hinz. The scripture reader was Melissa Loehr, and Melvin Menz delivered the eulogy. Music ministry was provided by director Gail Rueve and organist Christy Waldner. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Peter's R.C. Cathedral on Monday, July 7, 2014, at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Daniel Muyres, OSB. Others taking part were: Mae Korte, crossbearer; Brent Loehr and Melvin Menz, scripture readers; Dan Loehr, intentions; Garry and Elaine Loehr, giftbearers; Judy Loehr and Gail Kleefeld, memorial table attendants. Honorary pallbearers were "all those who shared in Martha's life, especially her friends at Futuristic Industries. Active pallbearers were Roger Hofmann, Ralph Hofmann, Kathryn Menz, Kyle Menz, Kevin Menz and Curt Menz. Interment followed at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the Canadian Cancer Society, St. Peter's Roman Catholic Cemetery Fund or the St. Mary's Villa Foundation. Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK.
