SCHLACHTER: Margaret Annie

September 23, 1922 - February 21, 2014

The death of Mrs. Margaret Annie (nee Krentz) Schlachter of St. Mary's Villa, Humboldt, SK, occurred peacefully at her residence on Friday, February 21, 2014. She was 91 years of age. Margaret, the third eldest in a family of ten, was born to George and Margaret (nee Louis) Krentz on September 23, 1922, at home on their farm in the Bruno district. She grew up there and attended Sunlight School. At an early age, Margaret knew what hard work and long days were. She would tell how she often mixed up a batch of bread before walking to school, as her mother suffered from asthma and was often very ill from late summer to fall. After completing Grade 8, Margaret worked as a hired girl for farm families in the area. On September 30, 1941, she married her life-long partner, Anton "Tony" Schlachter. They started their life together on a farm near Plunkett. Three children, two daughters and one son, were born to them. In 1949, they moved their family and their house to a farm west of Humboldt. There, Margaret and Tony continued farming until 1976, when they retired into Humboldt. Margaret was a member of the C.W.L., volunteering mostly with the catering group. She also worked at Nelson's Esso for a short time. After retirement, travel, fishing, doing cross stitch, setting puzzles, and gardening were some of her hobbies. Tony passed away on December 28, 1999. In February 2007, Margaret was no longer able to be on her own and moved to St. Michael's Haven in Cudworth. Later that year, she transferred to St. Joseph's Wing at St. Mary's Villa, where she received tender, loving care from the staff, for which her family is very grateful. Margaret will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her three children, nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren: DIANNE (Wilfred) Engele of Humboldt and family, Aaron (Patricia) Engele and their family, Amanda Engele (Riley Brockman) and her children Kyra, Aiden and Kolten King, Janelle (Kyle) Stumborg and their children Kashton, Aaliyah and Daxzen, Taylor Engele (Holly Hobman) of Humboldt, and Craig Watters of Saskatoon; Sheila Engele of Regina; Kevin (Kim) Engele and son Austin Engele of Maple Ridge, BC; and Wesley Engele of Cornwall, ON, and his family, Ariel Engele (Cory Boehm) and daughter Madison, and Desiree Engele, all of Saskatoon; DOREEN (Darrell) Guenther and family, Bruce (Tammy) Guenther and their family, Kirk, Melissa, Niko, Carmen and Antoinne Guenther, and Tracy Guenther and children Megan and Damond Ens, all of Osler, SK; and DONALD (Dianne) Schlachter of Humboldt and family, Michelle (Brent) Stammen and children Cody, Brandon and Courtney Stammen, all of Annaheim, SK, Jason (Aimee) Schlachter and children Ella and Anthony Schlachter, all of Humboldt, and Cory (Amanda) Schlachter and children Jessica and Dylan Schlachter; two sisters and one brother: Lavina Lobsinger and Bernice Krentz, both of Hamilton, ON, and Joseph (Pat) Krentz of Simcoe, ON; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
