JAEB: Louis
Louis G. Jaeb was born on January 8, 1915 at Humboldt, Sask to Louis and Mary (nee Frank) Jaeb. After attending Burton Lake School for a number of years he began working as a farm hand. When his mother and step-father moved to British Columbia, Louis and his brother Joe worked the family farm until 1944. In the late 1930s, at one of the Marysburg picnics, Louis met Margaret Mueller, daughter of Max and Susan Mueller. They fell in love and after a long courtship they married on Jan. 12, 1944, at Assumption Church in Marysburg. Following their wedding Louis and Margaret rented the Haskamp farm near Burton Lake for two years and then bought land and moved to St. Gertrude where they farmed until 1975. They raised nine children, and spawned their legacy which will pass on through their many grandchildren and great grandchildren. After their retirement in 1975, they split their time between the homestead in the winter, and Kipabiskau Lake in the summer, where they had a cottage. Finally, in 2003, after a rich life spent out on the farm and at the lake, at the ripe age of 88, Louis with Margaret moved into the Harry Ford Center in Humboldt. Four years later, in 2007 Margaret died. They had been married for 63 years and enjoyed a deeply devoted relationship. Her death was a great loss to Louis. After Margaret's death, Louis moved to St Mary's Villa in Humboldt into enriched housing, and then in 2011 to Meadow Edge House, a private care home in Lumsden. From there he moved to the Lumsden and District Heritage home where he was in full time care until his death. Throughout his life Louis was active in the community. He served on many boards including the Muenster Rural Telephone Company, Muenster Home and School, St. Gertrude School district and Muenster School district. Louis was a man of moral conviction. He held strong beliefs, and was an example of someone who truly lived with integrity. He had a keen sense of justice, and stood firmly behind what he felt was right. He loved a good argument. Not only was Louis a powerful mentor for his children, he set an example for many young farmers within the community. He believed in kindness and fairness, and he lived by these beliefs his entire life. Louis had a keen mind and could still recite poetry that he had learned in school. He loved music, playing coronet in the Muenster band and enjoying singing and dancing. He had a witty sense of humor and could always be counted on for a few laughs. His family was most important to him and he was proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Throughout the years, Louis was a dedicated husband and when Margaret's health failed he lovingly cared for her, his devotion never wavering. The death of Mr. Louis G. Jaeb, 99 years, of Lumsden & District Heritage Home, Lumsden, and formerly of Humboldt, occurred on Wednesday, March 5, 2014.
