Mrs. Gertrude Christine (nee Zens) Engele of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, SK, passed away at her residence on Monday, January 19, 2015. She was 94 years of age. Gertrude was born on May 1, 1920, to Peter and Anne (nee Schmitt) Zens in Humboldt. She was raised in the Carmel district and attended Valley View School, where she completed her Grade 10 education. Being the youngest of seven children, many chores fell into her lap, including caring for family members, the farm animals, and helping sow and reap the annual harvest. When the war ended, dad came marching home and proposed marriage. Mom accepted and they were married in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at Carmel on June 16, 1947. They made their home in Carmel, where they raised their family of six children, three sons and three daughters. As well as СÀ¶ÊÓƵ a busy homemaker, she enjoyed sewing, gardening, and volunteer work. Gertrude will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her six children: Gary (Annette) Engele, Patty (Lloyd) Wedewer, Jack Engele (Joan Germaine), June (Don) Arsenie, Joanne Engele (Rick Kopeck), and Randy Engele (Nicole Skalozub); 11 grandchildren: Trevor, Brandy, Carson, Kirby, Jon, David, Kaley, Jeff, Megan, Rylan and Adam; ten great-grandchildren: Meghan, Jessica, Owen, Ryan, Kameren, Kylie, Reese, Gage, Charlee and Finley; brother, Ed Zens; in-laws: Roland (Mildred) Engele, Evelyn Engele, and Elvira Stumborg; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. Gertrude was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Engele; parents, Peter and Anne (nee Schmitt) Zens; four sisters and one brother:Ìý Marie Stocker, Salome Engele, Caroline Albers, Cele Poole, Adolph Zens, and their spouses; and by in-laws of the Engele family. The Prayer Service for Gertrude was held at Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., presided by Robert Zens and organist Darlene Cash. Scripture readers were Annette Engele and Joan Germaine, and the eulogy was delivered by Gary Engele. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, on Thursday, January 22, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Paul Paproski. Others taking part were: David Engele, crossbearer; Lloyd Wedewer and Don Arsenie, scripture readers; Jack Engele, intentions; Randy Engele and Nicole Skalozub, giftbearers; Marlene Schmidt and Clara Freistadt, memorial table attendants. An honor guard was formed by members of the St. Augustine C.W.L. and the St. Elizabeth’s Ladies Auxiliary. Pallbearers were Trevor Engele, Carson Engele, Jeff Arsenie, Rylan Gates, Adam Gates, and Jon Engele. Music ministry was provided by organist Marie Aubin; Rick Zens, soloist; and the St. Augustine Parish Funeral Choir. Memorial donations may be directed to either the Humboldt District Hospital Foundation General Equipment Fund or the Saskatchewan Heart and Stroke Foundation.
