Elizabeth "Betty" BensonApril 2, 1930 - February 10, 2011Betty (nee Brown) Benson of the Herb Bassett Long-Term Care Facility, Prince Albert, (and formerly of Humboldt), passed away at her residence on Thursday, February 10th, 2011. She was 80 years of age. Betty was born to William and Jane (nee Crawford-Scott) Brown in Senlac, SK, where she was raised. In 1948, after completing grade ten, she moved to Humboldt. Betty began employment with Saskatchewan Government Telephones as an operator. It was during that time that she met her soul-mate, Louis Benson. They were married on June 18th, 1949, and were blessed with three children. Betty loved her role as a homemaker. She was a great cook and loved to bake --- oh, those homemade buns! Eventually, Betty went to work at Sears. She retired as manager in 1987. Over the years, Betty enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests. In earlier years, her favourite pastimes were curling and bridge. She enjoyed her retirement years tending to her flowers and large garden, spending summers at Stoney Lake, relaxing around the camp fire, knitting, visiting with grandchildren, going for walks at 6 a.m., and exercising at Curves. She also challenged Barb and Louis to many games of golf at the Spruce Home Golf Course. Betty and Louis were active members of the Royal Canadian Legion. They remained in Humboldt until 2006, when they relocated to Prince Albert to be close to their daughter Barbara. In May 2009, Betty went to live at the Herb Bassett Long Term Care Facility where she was cared for by the Memory Lane staff. She will be sadly missed and always lovingly remembered by her husband of 61 years, Louis Benson of Prince Albert; one son and two daughters: Philip (Lynn) Benson of Regina; Barbara (Howard) Steen of Prince Albert; and Bev (Jerry) Saretsky of Fort Saskatchewan, AB; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Helen and Jean; numerous nieces and nephews; and by many friends. She was predeceased by her father, William Brown (1974); mother, Jean Brown (1991); sister, Eva (Pete) Mills (1986); and by her great-granddaughter Jayla Schwedes (2006). A Celebration of Life for Betty was held in the Club Room of the Royal Canadian Legion, Humboldt Branch, on Tuesday, February 15th, 2011, officiated by the Legion Padre, Rev. Al Hingley. Words of remembrance were delivered by Betty's family. An honor guard was formed by members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Humboldt Branch. Interment will take place in the Legion section of the Humboldt Public Cemetery at a later date.
