Suspects allegedly steal taxi in NB, then abandon it

NORTH BATTLEFORD - Two male suspects have been arrested after allegedly stealing a taxi cab.

On Jan. 19 at approximately 5 a.m., Battlefords RCMP received a report of an armed robbery on 110 Street in North Battleford.

Investigation determined two males approached a taxi cab on 110 Street, threatened the driver and stole the vehicle. The driver did not report physical injuries to police.

Shortly after receiving report of the incident, officers located the cab on Mosquito, Grizzly Bear’s Head, Lean Man First Nation. The vehicle had been abandoned. Saskatchewan RCMP’s Police Dog Services was engaged to assist in the search for the suspects.

As a result of continued investigation, a Saskatchewan RCMP police dog tracked the suspects to a residence on Mosquito, Grizzly Bear’s Head, Lean Man First Nation. During the track, officers located a male walking through the snow. He was arrested at the scene. Officers located the second male inside the residence. The male resisted arrest and spat at one of the officers; however, officers were able to bring him safely into custody.

During the subsequent investigation, officers located and seized bear spray in the abandoned taxi cab.

Resulting from further investigation, an 18-year-old man, from North Battleford, is charged with:

  • one count, robbery – with other offensive weapon;
  • one count, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
  • one count, carrying concealed weapon; and
  • one count, disguised with intent to commit offence.

A 17-year-old youth male youth, from North Battleford, is charged with:

  • one count, robbery – with other offensive weapon;
  • one count, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
  • one count, resist/obstruct peace officer;
  • one count, assault on police officer;
  • one count, carrying a concealed weapon; and
  • three counts, fail to comply with release order condition.

The two suspects were scheduled to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on Jan. 22.
