THE BATTLEFORDS - According to a press release from the Battlefords Scuba Community, they are establishing a Scuba Diver Training Scholarship to help assist deserving young people get into a sport that often deters people with its perceived costs.
"It will open the door to a lifelong activity, or it may open the door to a career in the diving business," reads the release.
BSC sees this as a means of paying back to the community for the generous support it has received over the years from the community and its funding agencies. Almost 1,900 high school students have taken part, at no cost to the students, in the Discover Scuba for High Schools program through this support.
The club has determined that it will award one scholarship annually to see what the reception is.
The value of the scholarship is $1,000, which will be used to defray the costs of the PADI Open Water Scuba Diver training course, instructional materials, pool time, instruction and all the equipment necessary for the course, including the completion dives and accommodation and meals for participants from out of the area along with some compensation for travel expenses.
All the training, including the completion dives, will be done in the Battlefords region.
The scholarship program is open to Saskatchewan residents 16 to 25 years of age inclusive.
The application process includes completing an application form and preparing a 500 to 1000-word essay on a subject related to scuba diving. The application must be accompanied by a letter of reference written by an adult who is not a member of the applicant’s family. The essay must be typewritten. The deadline for applications for this year is March 31.
