PERTH, United Kingdom — The World Curling Federation has removed the 2022 European Curling Championships from the Russian city of Perm in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The WCF said in a release Friday that the decision was made after an emergency meeting of the World Curling Federation board.

The organization said a new host city for the event scheduled for Nov. 19-26 will be named at a later date.

The WCF's announcement comes amid multiple punitive measures against Russia throughout the sporting world.

Earlier Friday, Europe's governing body of soccer, UEFA, announced the Champions League final would be moved from St. Petersburg, Russia, to Paris. And Formula One dropped a race in Sochi from its calendar.

The International Ski Federation announced that Russia will not host any more of its World Cup events this winter.

The International Olympic Committee also urged sports federations to move their events out of Russia or Belarus, which Moscow is using as a staging ground for its troops moving into Ukraine from the north.

Scotland swept the 2021 European championships in Lillehammer, Norway, with Bruce Mouat winning the men's title and Eve Muirhead taking the women's.
