The Yorkton Sherring Gold Terriers of the SSMHL Peewee Division have finished second overall in the six team Peewee Division with a record of 15-3-2, however they have also recently advanced to the Provincial semi-finals after defeating the Weyburn Youngfellow Wings 5-2 in Weyburn in Game Two of their two game total goal Provincial quarterfinal series to give them an 8-7 series win.
The win comes on the heels of a 5-3 Yorkton loss to Weyburn.
Things started well for Yorkton in Game Two as Jackson Berezowski opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game when his shot eluded Weyburn goaltender Matthew Dutchak for a 1-0 Sherring Gold Terrier advantage.
Steven Kesslering brought the home team back even with a power-play goal with 14:31 left in the opening frame, however Ryder Korczak restored the Yorkton lead before the end of the period to give Yorkton a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.
The lead was extended to two just 2:40 into the second period when Mitchel Madsen put the puck past Dutchak to make it 3-1.
The Madsen marker also chased Dutchak from the game in favour of Weyburn backup goaltender Jordan Muhr.
Korczak welcomed Muhr to the game not long after he replaced Dutchak by firing a shot past the cold Weyburn netminder to make it 4-1 Terriers, however Weyburn workhorse Ethan Ernst cut the Yorkton lead back down to two when he beat Spencer Welke on the power-play with just 44 seconds remaining in the period to make it a 4-2 game after two periods.
Josh Herman fired the only goal of the third period past Muhr just 2:19 into the third period for what would end up СÀ¶ÊÓƵ the series clinching goal.
Welke picked up the win for Yorkton while Dutchak was saddled with the loss..
The Sherring Gold Terriers will now take on the Regina representative in the Provincial semi-final round.
They also have a first round bye in the SSMHL Peewee playoffs due to finishing in the top two and will not know their second round playoff opponent until next week.
Midgets
The Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers of the SSMHL Midget Division, meanwhile, haven’t fared as well, falling to the Weyburn Lightstream Wings 5-2 in their second-to-last regular season game.
Leading scorer Tayon Metzler scored in the loss, as did captain Kholton Shewchuk.
The loss now creates a logjam for the eighth and final playoff spot, as both the Kinsmen Terriers (14-16-7) and Regina Rangers (12-14-11) have 35 points with one game left.
Yorkton needs to win or tie their final game of the season and have Regina lose in order to qualify for the postseason as the Rangers currently hold the tiebreaker, defeating the Kinsmen Terriers 5-3 and 3-1 back in November.
The Kinsmen Terriers traveled to Estevan last night for their final league game of the season against the Apex Bruins, however results were unavailable at press time. Please check www.southsaskminorhockeyleague.ca for up-to-date information.
