The ‘Roar for Four’ is alive and well for the Yorkton Sherring Gold Terriers, as their quest for a fourth straight Pee Wee ‘AA’ Provincial Championship is still alive after crushing the Melville Millionaires 9-2 in Game One and 7-2 in Game Two to easily take the two game total goal provincial second round series 16-4.
The win moves the Sherring Gold Terriers into the third round where they will meet the upstart Weyburn Youngfellow Wings, who upset second ranked Swift Current 10-9 in their two game total goal series, dropping Game One 6-4 before winning Game Two 6-3 in overtime.
Tanner Hoffman led all Yorkton players in scoring in Game One. The young forward picked up three goals and two assists, including two goals in the opening 20 minutes, to lead the Sherring Gold Terriers to a convincing Game One victory over the Melville Millionaires in Melville on Tuesday, January 27.
Both Jackson Berezowski and Tony Roebuck had a pair of goals in the win while singles were added by Mitch Madsen and Ryder Korczak.
Spencer Welke picked up the win for the Sherring Gold Terriers stopping 16-of-18 Melville attempts while Aiden Elmy took the loss, letting in nine goals on 50 Yorkton shots.
Millionaire standout forward Dawson Springer had both of the Melville goals in the loss.
Game Two was much the same as Game One, with Yorkton jumping out to a quick lead after 20 minutes, this time taking a 4-0 lead into the first intermission on a pair of goals by Austin Dycer and singles by Josh Haczekwicz and Berezowski.
Melville’s Jeff Lowe cut into the Sherring Gold Terrier lead with 14:19 left in the second frame, however Berezowski restored the four goal Yorkton cushion with his second of the game midway through the period.
A Springer goal in the third period made it 5-2, however a pair of Yorkton markers, one each by Chace Sperling and Tony Roebuck, made it a 7-2 final, meaning the Sherring Gold Terriers punched their ticket into the third round of the Pee Wee ‘AA’ Provincials by virtue of a 16-4 total goal series victory.
Kael DePape picked up the win between the Yorkton pipes while Dominic Orr was saddled with the defeat.
“I think we had a real good Game One in Melville there,” said Sherring Gold Terrier head coach Ryan Hoffman following the Game Two win. “We got off to a really good start and then played a real complete 60 minutes.
“Then coming in to Game Two with a seven goal lead you don’t really want to let the foot off the gas, although we did have a bit of a slow start, to come out of the first period up four, we’ll take that for sure.”
The Provincial series win comes on the heels of a less than impressive showing at the Regina Peewee Classic, where the Sherring Gold Terriers finished with a 3-2 record.
However Hoffman feels that their experience at the Regina tournament, while not altogether pleasant, will no doubt be something that will benefit his team in the long run. “Going to the Regina tournament and getting to play some different teams and some real strong teams was good for us,” offered Hoffman, continuing, “Although you don’t like to lose hockey games, those are maybe the games that you learn the most from instead of the 9-2 games in your favour.
“Those games there we played teams that were super deep and that played at a real quick pace and that’s only going to help us down the stretch here.”
