Only one of Yorkton’s two SSMHL teams were in action this past weekend, as the Yorkton Sherring Gold Terriers of the SSMHL’s Peewee Division travelled to Regina to compete in the prestigious 23rd annual Premier Pee Wee Classic tournament while the Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers of the SSMHL’s midget ‘AA’ league were idle due to high school final exams.
The Sherring Gold Terriers opened the tournament up with a convincing win, easily handling the Regina Buffalos 6-1 on Thursday, January 22.
Yorkton then picked up their second consecutive win of the tournament, once again scoring six goals en route to a 6-4 victory over Alberta’s Lloydminster Blazers before losing to the Olds Grizzlies by a score of 8-3.
The loss to Olds gave the Sherring Gold Terriers a 2-1 record after the round-robin portion of the tournament, sending them to the ‘B’ Side playoff round where they first met the Calgary NW Warriors.
Calgary proved to be a tough test for the Sherring Gold Terriers, however they simply weren’t tough enough as Yorkton moved past them and into the ‘B’ Side semi-finals by virtue of a 4-3 victory.
The Sherring Gold Terriers ran into some stiff competition in the ‘B’ Side semi-finals in the form of the Strathcona Warriors, falling 6-0 to end their tournament at 3-2.
