Minor hockey gearing up for the season

The Yorkton Minor Hockey Association (YMHA) was among the many booths set up at this year's City Wide Registration night Aug. 31 at the Gallagher Centre.

It concluded one full month of minor hockey registration for YMH and the group reports that although not much will likely change for the upcoming hockey season, it was a good idea to have nearly 30 days of registration time available to the parents of the players.

"YMH found that having Hockey Registration for the whole month of August was a great success. All comments from registrants were good," says Gina Flett, YMA representative.

Last season was a huge success for YMH. There were as many as 10 different clubs achieve success last season and into the playoffs and even though teams for this season have yet to be determined, the numbers appear to be about the same.

"Numbers are similar to the past two years looking like it will be around 300 players for the 2011/2012 season."

In terms of support for the organization, Flett said she wants to thank current team sponsors as well as those companies who are board sponsors at the Kinsmen and Farrell Agencies Arenas, for their continued efforts.

Flett added that the opening date(s) for the upcoming season have yet to be determined. It will depend on the scheduling needs of the various age groups (atom, pee wee, tyke, novice, etc).

YMH will be holding a three-on-three tournament to officially start the season.

It will take place from Sept. 6-11.

"It's always a great way for the players to start the seasonwith a high tempo, fast-paced skate," suggests Flett.

Following the three-on-three, there will be a conditioning camp immediately after, on Sept. 11 running through for five days, ending on Sept. 15.

Tier I tryouts will also be held that week, says Flett.

Tryouts will also be a multi-day event, going from Sept. 16-18.

"Our power skating clinics will start on Sept 19 and a Pee Wee AA tournament on Sept 24-25with continued power skating to finish up the month," closes Flett.
