This weekend, on Saturday, April 2, the Yorkton Bantam ‘A’ Crushers and Melville Minor Hockey will be hosting a ‘Female Hockey Jamboree’ at the Yorkton Farrell Agencies Arena from 7:00-8:30pm.
All current and prospective female hockey players from the Parkland area that are eligible to play minor hockey next season are invited to attend in order for female hockey coaches to gauge how many local area players there are. “What we’re doing is, we’re hosting this female hockey jamboree at the Farrell Agencies Arena and it’s kind of a free skate for the girls, just so we can see how many girls there are that want to play female hockey,” said Bantam Crusher head coach Fred Schrader. “We know there are enough girls to put together bantam and midget teams, but we’re trying to get a pee wee team started in the area as well.”
The hopeful pee wee team will play in the СƵ Sask Female Hockey League (SSFHL) Pee Wee Division with six other teams and would be based out of Melville, with Yorkton СƵ the home for the Bantam team and Springside/Churchbridge the home of the Midget club. “We’re hoping to get the pee wee team going so that we can continue to build on the growth of female hockey in the area,” mentioned Schrader, adding that there seems to be enough interest at the moment to say that the Pee Wee team is almost a definite yes. “I don’t know the exact numbers, but I’ve been talking to Darrell Halarewich out of Melville and he thinks there will be enough interest in the Yorkton and Melville area to start a pee wee girls’ team so that’s great.”
Schrader says that following the female hockey jamboree there will be a brief parent session where coaches will answer any and all questions about female hockey.
In addition, interested players and parents of prospective players are encouraged to contact Schrader at (306) 621-7609 should they find themselves in need of more information prior to the jamboree.
