REGINA - The major fire at Wheat City Metals north of Regina is now out.
Regina Fire and Protective Services, who had been fighting the fire since about 1 p.m. on Thursday, announced in a news release that they had concluded their operations at Wheat City Metals north of Regina at approximately 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31.
The fire department said in their release the fire was fully extinguished by removing the fire load, which meant continuously pouring water while heavy equipment spread out the pile. That enabled firefighters to reach the seat of the fire, according to Regina Fire.
The blaze at the scrap metal yard had resulted in a large plume of smoke north of the city which was easily visible by Regina residents. Fortunately, no injuries resulted.
The investigation has commenced into the cause of the fire, and Regina Fire confirms that will be handled by the Rural Municipality of Sherwood, the jurisdiction where the fire was located.
